M-audio ProjectMix vs 002r + Command8 new
      #293972 - 09/05/06 01:48 PM
I'm currently planning my homestudio solution, which will be running on a ProTools based PC.

I would just like some thoughts on whether I should go for the ProjectMix or the digi002r + Command|8. And don't put price and the fact that the ProjectMix only can use PT M-powered into consideration.

Oh and I'm going to buy a Behringer ADA8000 preamp anyway, so the numbers of I/O ain't that important either.

I will buy one of those, so no point in suggesting any other "better" solutions!

In general I'll be recording drums, guitars, bass and some synth/softsynth.

All thoughts are highly appreciated!

The difference in use and practicality isn't too vast, but the difference in build-quality and component quality is fairly big.

The 002R has Focusrite Platinum range pre-amps, whereas the ProjectMix has the same budget pre-amps found in the M-Audio Octane. I'm also pretty sure that the Command 8 has Penny & Giles motorised faders, so you're more likely to have them last for years without any fuss. I've heard the ProjectMix' faders are noisey, and don't glide as smoothly as you would expect. Also, the ProjectMix' inputs can only be loaded with -10dBV signals, whereas the 002R will accept both -10dBV and +4dBu signals.

I would personally go for the Digi 002R with the Command 8. But, it's up to you. If you can justify the price difference, then definitely go for it. If you'd prefer the 002R and the control surface in one unit, then look at the 002 console.

Try out both set-ups. It really is personal preference.

Erm ... does it though?? I know that the Mbox did, but a quick check of the Digi site and both SOS reviews (002 and 002R) found no mention of this.

The reason that I ask is that someone on another forum did a test of the mic pres on the 002R against a home made mic pre and the difference was (putting it bluntly) staggering! Pillow over the speaker time. Plus I'd heard comments about the quality of the mic pres on the 002 for a long time and non of them were favourable. However, people are still full of praise for the Focusrite ones although I'm prepared to believe that they like the VFM factor rather than the absolute quality.
