Do you have to buy some software? I can't find an OS function for it.

What do you want to do Rob??
reformat why?
Use Disk utility to
re-initialise the disk, you can also change format types and partition it here.
should be all you need....
for security issues, you can also
write zeros and other stuff using the options in Disk utility...
takes a while
though on any decent size drive...

Ah, probably the wrong question... You know my misbehaving iMac with the weird
graphic problem? Well, it's been replaced but it's still sitting there looking at me... So I did an HD scan which reported errors and quit. But the disc structure is
OK. Will re-initialising fix those errors?

It's the surface scan in TechTools (GlowPlug)... I think that means hardware?

The TechTools disc also reports a VRAM fault in the iMac... that explains the video
breakup. So it is def. a dead parrot. Just some RAM and Airport card
to salvage... Can you recycle a dead iMac? Seems a shame to trash a 17 inch
screen and all...

Hi,
Interesting thread- faulty Vram can often be replaced but :-
Can you describe your iMac ( ie spec) and the effect of the fault on your screen, please
?

it's an anglepoise G4 iMac..
I'll have to check on the VRAM Rob...
but i think you'll find that a decent ASP (Like Amsys) would be able to repair it by
replacing the VRAM, BUT i can't be sure offhand, as i've not encountered faulty VRAM on an
Anglepoise iMac before now.

Like Max he say: G4 flat screen
1Ghz
The fault is (briefly) that in OS X GUI the screen image breaks up with
vertical streaks. The iMac hardware test disc didn't report errors (and that screen stays
up) and in target disc mode it will run forever, as with any remote operation. Use the OS
X GUI though and after about 20 mins it crash.
AFAIK the VRAM is on the
motherboard and not a user job. It's looking like the repair is way over the value of the
unit.
(I've got a new G5 - not an all-in-one this time - BTW so no sweat on
that front.)
