5.1 monitors new
      #31258 - 10/10/04 01:05 PM
I can't find a thread about this anywhere already so I'll ask now: I'm making the move to surround recording/mixing so what 5.1 monitor systems would people recommend (under £3000, preferably well-under)? At the moment I'm planning to demo Blue Sky System One and Genelec 1029's but I wondered how the cheaper systems like Tannoy Reveals stand up in comparison?

I'd have to say it depends a bit on whether you still plan on doing any stereo work (I am sure you will need both), and if so, will these same speakers be used as your stereo pair?

What percentage of your work will be surround?

The reason I ask, is because if you are only starting to dabble a bit in surround like a lot of us are (!), then you can probably get by a budget for the surround as long as you have a great pair of stereo monitors (and possibly a great sub).

btw... the Blue Skys sound great in that price range to my ears! I only heard them in a store, but it was in their special surround monitor room, and they really stood out as being clear and punchy.

Most things will no doubt still be stereo and I will be keeping my current Tannoy DTM15s for that but the 5.1 work will be for release so the monitoring needs to be up to scratch. I presume no-one would recommend using a good stereo pair for fine tuning 5.1 mixes then use cheaper surrounds for positioning?

You'r right.

It's best to match all 5 speakers otherwise they'll cause more problems than they solve.

Genelec's new 8000 series are supposed to have excellent imaging!

You should be able to get a PMC system at that price (just).

Thanks folks. I hadn't thought PMCs would be in my budget but just maybe...
