'The Last Goodbye'. Suggestions, Comments
      #321049 - 06/07/06 11:33 PM
Hey Everyone,

First piece of music I have posted here and looking for feedback on any aspect, recording, performance, bum notes etc etc.

I composed this piece with a film in mind, had a vision of a guitar solo or spanish/acoustic chord progression somewhere in the mix but not had the right inspiration so far hence why i'm posting this here.

Any feedback would be much apreciated.

I used reason 2.5 for virtually the whole composition except for Cubase SX to add some dynamics and boost using the magneta? plug in.

The song can be heard on my, myspace (this is not an atempt to get more people there)
If people would prefer me to yousendit the file then let me know.

look forward to some feedback

Regards

Andrew

Hello

Not entirely sure what to make of it, I did like the various melodies and the overall texture of the piece, but a few things struck me.

I really didn't like that drum rhythm, the first time it popped up it was barely audible and the unusaul nature of it, a repeating cymbal and bass drum, then a snare, then another bass drum, over and over again only occaisonally offset by a random and often out of time cymbal somewhere else, it just annoyed me and distracted me from the piano melodies when it was playing. I applaud your attempt to be different, but it doesn't work for me.

Overall, as I said, I did like some of the melodies, but it does stand out as being a rough mix created in Reason rather than a polished work. It does have that film soundtrack feel to it, but I'm afraid Maximilian who posted a few days ago added a thread on here of some very competent examples of film soundtrack music, and after that your tune doesn't stand up well against them. Although to be fair, I think he makes a living from it, so he's got a headstart on you.

Overall, my take would be you've some nice ideas - use some sweeter sounds, create more organic and atmospheric textures and get those drums working to the advantage of the tune.

Well done and best of luck, keeping working hard at it. Be interested to hear your next effort.

Jim

Thanks for the detailed response so quick (gives me something to sleep on tonight).

I had kept the drum pattern low in the mix as I wasn't over confident about it. I had an idea for the drums to be nice and 'big' but was unable to find any decent samples within Reason.

I feel that investing in a decent sample library could be worthwhile?
