USB mixers new
      #346520 - 30/08/06 06:27 PM
I am looking into an affordable recording system and i noticed that USB interfaces or Usb mixer/interfaces are cheaper than anything firewire. I want to know if you can record more than one track at the same time and have them show up in the software on the computer as seperate tracks. I know you can do this with firewire interfaces so if you cant do it with a USB mixer is it possible to run a normal mixer into a firewire interface and then have the tracks recorded individually but at the same time?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, they will come up as discrete tracks.

How many tracks are you looking at wanting to record simultaneously, and what's your budget?

I'll look some stuff up for you now - also do you need anything like preamps, DI inputs?

I want to record at least 8 tracks simultaneously, with all 8 having XLR inputs. and as far as my budget goes, something cheap. quality is not on the top of my list at this point.

No I don't think I need any preamps or anything. just an interface. But when you say that they will come up as discrete tracks do you say that in regards to the mixer through the firewire interface or a USB mixer straight into the computer?

there is no way usb 1.0 (the older, cheaper version) can handle 8 tracks. also, when figuring track count be sure to include playback tracks (ie, you want to multitrack and record overdubs, you're going to need to playback at least one track so you can monitor what your adding overdubs to.)

look for a used motu 828 or the like, a firewire i/f.

cheers,

d

yeah I totally agree with the fact that USB 1.0 would not be able to handle 8 tracks but what about 2.0?

And with the firewire interface could I just have the two main outs left and right on my mixer go out to the two ins on the firewire interface and have each track record seperately??? Thanks for all the help so far!

USB has pretty much been ousted by firewire in this area and is very much yesterday's technology - it's gone the way of Betamax and Laserdisks. I doubt it will be well supported for this type of application, and in all honesty why would you want it when (say) a firewire cable will support 24 tracks going in each direction on any of my Motu interfaces?

You may save some pennies buying USB, but there's a reason for that...

No.

You're taking two tracks out of the mixer so you get two tracks into the interface and then into the computer.

You only get as many separate tracks as you use inputs

ok thats what i thought. so if I wanted to go with firewire and record simultaneous tracks, would an interface like the PreSonus Firepod be a good way to go?
