How can I achieve this? new
      #347507 - 01/09/06 06:38 PM
HI guys

I'm wondering how I can achieve the following:

I'm a keyboard player and am planning a crazy idea for playing live that involves me getting the outputs from other stage instruments/mics sent to a mixer next to me, whilst the front of house desk still recieves the same outputs.

I thought this would be simple to achieve but from speaking to Studiospares they seemed to think that a passive splitter will halve the signal to each output, and this is obviously gonna p!ss off a sound engineer. Is this correct in all cases? So they suggested I need to get an Active splitter and from what i can tell, the price is EXPENSIVE!

In my head I imagined having a passive stage box style splitter that had a 5 metre loom attahced to run over to my side of the stage but it seems it won't be this easy.

If anyone can shed some light on this or suggest alternatives that would be great.

pete

Good idea, i've thought about doing the same thing myself. I guess it comes down to what you want to do. Just add some vocoded backing vocals to the lead vocal? Have the drums modulate your synths? I'd have thought the easiest way of doing things would be to have a little mixer with you that has the relevant instruments sent to the sound guy on pre fader sends. Using a little mixer could also allow you to switch between the different instruments as you go along.

If you've got a desk on stage with you then I guess you could take the signals directly into your desk and them send them to FOH via direct outputs (hopefully pre-fade & pre-eq). However the FOH guy would be reliant on you setting the gain and (s)he would probably not like that....

I guess some instruments could be sent to DI boxes with parallel outputs but as for mics they need to be sent to a preamp first and as I said I doubt most FOH engineers would be pleased with you setting the gain.

Take all of the line level signals directly into your mixer and provide the engineer with the direct outs of individual signals from the mixer, then separately mic guitar cabs etc. for your own feed and let the engineer get on with his or her own thing FoH. Obviously this isn't feasible if you want every input from stage i.e. kit etc... but without using an active splitter, it seems to me like the simplest option. It depends on the gig, but many venues have an active split for monitors anyway and some are built into the moni desk so you could reach a comprimise by controlling your own monitors, although I wouldn't fancy this if you were one of a few bands on the bill!

Good Luck.
