I have to do an assignment on a seminal album and talk about the production...mics,
positioning etc etc. Does anybody know where I can get information about this? I am
thinking about doing ''Loveless'' by My Bloody Valentine but I cannot get much. Any
help would be great!
Thanks.

You wont be able to get information of that detail unless you are lucky enough to come
across a certain article from god knows where, or ask the engineer and producer that was
present at the time, even then they might not remember!
I dont know what they
want from you, but I would imagine they would be looking for something which is more
apparent from the listening to of the album to be honest. I would look at the placement
of the instruments, the use of effects and processors ect. Talk about how the vocals are
treated, are they "pop" vocals right at the front of the mix, or are they pushed to the
back of the mix? Are the guitars highly distorted or they clean? Those are just basic
examples and im sure you could think of much more indepth stuff. And obviously then dicuss
what effect the production has and how it complements the arrangments.
I hope
that helps.

Sweet sounding stuff, but probably the least straightforward album you could pick to write
a technical essay about.
Don't know how much you've done already, but a quick
google on your behalf turned up this:
http://www.mybloodyvalentine.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loveless_%28album%29
http://etd.lib.fsu.edu/theses/available/etd-04102006-103749/
That last one is a master's thesis on the exact same topic you're thinking about
writing about! The writer's email address is on that page-- why don't you try him?
cheers
ryan
ps I was disappointed in their subsequent work.

Have you considered picking one of the Sound On Sound 'classic tracks' articles as a
basis?

I don't think SOS has done anything by
MBV... layers upon layers of guitar processing, apparently under the influence...

I know that Guy Fixsen did some engineering on that album and still works with Kevin
Shields. Here is his Website You
should drop him an email and arrange to interview him. I am sure he would make some time
to talk about his work. Andy
