It seems to me that the whole industry depends far too much on trust (ha!) and that's a recipe for disaster, or at least deep suspicion.

Does the MCPS not have a competitor? Or indeed the PRS?

Can you not in these free-trade EU times decide to sign up with say a French or German royalty-collector?

Can't systems put in place in another era be replaced by something transparent like a dynamic on-line database (members' only access) which shows on a daily update what plays you've had and what you've earned in consequence?

Maybe with the resulting royalties credited direct to your bank account every couple of weeks?

Yeah, exactly. That's what is needed here. It's got to be the way forward.

Rob C: There's a PRS members consultation at Berners Street on wed 18th October to discuss the allocation of royalties for tv performances. Be great if you could go along and air the views and ideas expressed here (because you seem to have a very good grasp of the industry and its workings). I would go myself but am having an op that week.

Really needs someone to ask PRS what exactly they are doing to move into the 21st century.

Just got news of the PRS convention myself and immediately thought of this thread - not sure I'll be commuting up to London for that though.

I can't help feeling that we're banging on about two different issues here. On the one hand you're talking about how we get paid and why it takes so long. Whereas Bob's original argument was about are we being paid accurately, what with Sample days, inaccurate returns and what not.

Though it would be useful to receive weekly or bi-weekly payments direct into our accounts, it pales into insignificance if you have performances which aren't being logged.

I kinda like the big cheques anyway!

I can confirm that it is entirely possible to have your MCPS Writer share paid directly to you (unless your Publishing contract says you may not...

Thanks for that Peter... I thought it was possible, but did wonder about library music.

Bob: I'm not a PRS member (or an MCPS member) so I probably wouldn't be allowed at a members event... although I do have quite a lot to say about them all.

Colin: yep, there's at least two theads here... I nearly started a new one for the Shazam thing. It does make some kind of sense all together though.

Steve: the EU is trying to force some changes but it seems to me the societies have become very good at changing on the surface and staying the same underneath. For example, the EU wants EU-wide licensing (implying competition) the answer of the societies is to form affiliations and to launch EU licenses without making it clear they're only "online and mobile". But as I say there was a monopoly report - which is interesting if you like this kind of thing - and I don't think they can fend another one off forever.

And don't forget, if you're U2 you get your Wembley PRS cheque the same day as the gig. That's got to be a comfort, eh?

I like the big cheques too but I can't believe that in this day and age we can't log into an online PRS/MCPS account and see exactly what is being used, where, and how much it is generating. We can look at our bank accounts in this way so how difficult would it be? Wouldn't need anyone to enter the info either and could be totally automated.

Stand by for action - we are about to launch Stingray!
