      #360284 - 28/09/06 07:16 PM
Heya,

I have got hold of a Yamaha AW4416. I am able to record directly to the mixer, however, is it possible to connect it to a computer and use it with cubase or w/e

Im farely new to recording, can some people give me advice of what extras for the mixer I would need to buy, what soundcard, software etc etc.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave. Check out this AW site. You'll get all the answers you need there if you do a search or ask the question. Recommend doing the search first.

What computer (platform) and OS are you using?

By providing a little extra information about your setup you're likely to get more helpful answers

Yeah - the AW4416 is a great machine and you can make some nice recordings without using a computer at all! If you do want to do some sequencing with a pc you can sync it to the AW using midi.

Ok, one final point about it.

We have recorded some stuff on it and want to burn it to CD, but it says it has to be recorded in stereo, how do I record the songs into stereo?

Thanks

Dave

I think this is referring to doing a mixdown of the material, it should be on the manual. I am not exactly sure how this unit operates but usually there is a mixing/mastering section that you need to access and then mix the song down to a PC, or if you have a built in CD burner burn straight to it on the Yamaha.

Yes you have to enable the stereo track and make a stereo mix before burning to the internal CDR. The AW is a very powerful machine but the flip of that is there is lots to learn - you can download the manuals from the Yamaha site.

Dave, this is a copy of my notes on this subject. They're old and go back to when I was first learning this machine, so they're to my "taste". They should get you through it though.

10. CREATING STEREO TRACKS

Before you’re able to put tracks onto a CD, you must create them in Stereo. You will do this after you’re happy that all Editing and Mixing and Automixing are done to your satisfaction.

Select the song you require and load it. Then press the red “ST” (Stereo) in the “Rec Track Select” section. (This will begin flashing). Hit “Play” to check that your levels are OK and if you’re happy; make sure the “Stereo Fader” is turned up to at least “5” and isn’t peaking. Now stop it , “RTZ” and hit “Rec and Play” together to record the stereo track.. Hit Stop” when the song finishes. Hit the “Song” button in the top left corner (Work Navigate section). And select your next song. When prompted, “Save” the previous song. This is saving the last stereo track you were working on. Proceed as above for your next stereo track…and “Save” when finished.

All “Stereo’d” tracks are now ready to go onto CD.

To listen to the STEREO’d track, click on “STEREO” (F3) in the “TRACK” screen. With the recording stopped, click on the button below the “M” (Mute) to unmute it (Mute is the default state). This will let you hear the stereo track as recorded to tracks 1 / 2. If you go in and out of “Mute” and listen, this will tell you if there’s a difference in your “Mixed” track compared to your “Stereo’d” track.

See Chapter 5, Operation Guide, Page 102, Recording The Stereo Track.

Advisable...

I've used one for the last 5 years or so. I'm very happy with it - I'm now at the stage that there's very few features of it that I can't/don't use - generally down to personal production styles & not unfamiliarity with the technology.

As SunShineState mentions, it is a very powerful machine, and comes with a learning curve. Some standalone recorders are designed 'down' to simplicity, to make things easier for the novice; others are designed 'up' in capability, to offer more of the features of a more advanced multitrack & mixer combination. The AW4416 falls into the latter camp.

As Cathal mentions, to burn CDs you must first have a stereo track/file for each song/project. The 'stereo track' section is like an in-built DAT or 2-track recorder, to which multitrack material must be mixed down before being committed to CD.

I've lauded the AW in many of my previous posts... you may find some of those helpful.

Regards,

Mike

Like Mike I love my AW4416 - its a really good machine once you get to know it. I also have the newer AW1600 which is designed to be simpler to use, but I actually find it more frustrating - as Mike says the 4416 is much more like a mixer/recorder combination. You can make great recordings without any other outboard gear - the machine has 2 fx processors and EQ and Dynamics on every channel - what more do you need!

Cheers

Cheers for all that.

Thanks to the guys notes (sorry forgot your name) i managed to get it to work.

Gona really get to grips with the mixer sometime, not acutally mine, belongs to my school and I set it up so we could use it for GCSE recordings.

Thanks again

Dave
