19 inch. 483mm or 489mm new
      #398431 - 29/12/06 12:06 PM
Hi all.

I just discovered some measurment problems that shocked me a little.

Thing is.
I am about to build a Table for my studio with rack enclosures to go with it.
A friend of mine is going to cut the wood and i will build it.
Now i have constructed the whole thing by using 483mm as the width for the 19 inch compartments.

However, in this article:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Feb03/articles/studioinstallation0203.asp< /a>
it is written to have it 489mm wide.

What shall i do now? Has anyone build a rack by himself and which measures (483mm or 489mm) have you used?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
With kind regards
Jan Stucki

19" equals to 482.6 mm, so I think there must be a printing error in the article.

If I'd build a rack, I'd keep a small margin - perhaps two mm on either side, so I'd end up with a width of 487 mm.

Cheers,
Frank

True. 19" is 482.6mm thats why i ask for 483mm.

Well i guess thats why it is stated in the article 489mm.
It also seems that the used rails in the article are the same that i am about to order.

Thank you very much for your reply but i really would like an 489mm or 483mm answer... ;-)

489mm.
There - I expect you feel MUCH better now!

Never let it be said that we don`t give the punter what he asks for at SOS land.

But it is probably more apposite to consider that there is always several mm of play in the captive nuts used in most rack rail, so the most critical dimension is the width of the widest piece of 19" equipment you are going to mount. I suggest the wider dimension based on personal experience that there are a lot of 19" units that leave you precious little room laterally! 489 will give you a decent amount of play without actually leasving sodding great gaps at the sides.

You could do worwe than following the standard: http://www.blinkbits.com/en_wikifeeds/IEC_60297

The opening between the rails is very important as is the pitch of the holes and the centre-to-centre of the holes (between rails).

Stookie,

Have you seen my post: [Project: Quick and easy Studio Rack] I used a spacing of 486mm which was quite ample. (but if others say use 489 then who an I to argue, use that instead) In my post I went through the stages of building a rack and any problems I encountered to help anyone else who was thinking of building one.

If you have already had all your wood cut, you may have to get some more wood cut, but all you vertical pieces may be ok. But you also need to allow for an extra 6-9mm for the height and when fitting the rails, leave equal gaps top and bottom. With a 6mm allowance (i.e. 3mm top and bottom) when you have fitted your equipment, those gaps get filled up and it can be a tight fit, so aim for a minimum of 6mm.

Mike

Since this thread is getting too anal to live, I decided to go measure a few racks.

Everything I measured is around 487 to 488, including a couple of quikloks.

However, I come back to my original point that it is the distance between the rails that is more likely to give you trouble than the width of the opening you fit them to.

You need to be close to 18.75" between centres on the nut cages, but also check that you have plenty of clearance for the BODY or CASE of the widest 19" box you are going to mount.
It is no use slavishly sticking your rails 486mm apart if that leaves you much under 447mm BETWEEN the inner edges of the fitted rails.

I hope this will help reassure you, but if push comes to shove and you make the gap too wide you can always add washers to space the rails off a bit.
On the other hand, it is somewhat harder to expand a too-small rack case.
