Mixing with your Mind - book review.
      #42423 - 29/10/04 07:41 AM
"Mixing with your Mind" is written from a unique perspective which brings the perception and personality of the engineer into the mixing process. Stav avoids the typical scientific analysis and considers what you need to sense in yourself and what you need to listen for to get the results you want. There are practical solutions to common recording problems which cannot be found elsewhere and invaluable advice as to how to put that "magic" in the recordings.

Those with an e-sub can access the sos review on line from the August 2004 issue.

The book is currently only available from Michael Stavrou's web site here. However, I am arranging import of a number of copies myself and I will be able to make them available in the UK without the inconvenience of having to order through the internet.

Have you got any copies into the UK yet? I'd like one too!

Cheers

Just a small criticism - the author quite often assumes that we all have

1 - a huge array of mics to pick and choose from,
2 - an assistant to run around at our beck and call,
3 - the time and space to move drums around in an otherwise silent environment, looking for magic sounding room areas.

Other than those things, it's a great book.

So as a juicy tidbit/incentive, does anyone want to reveal how and in order Michael Stavrou suggests setting your compressor, given that it's so unconventional?

Ta,

No......

but I will tell you something Michael told me before I bought the book.

When recording a vocal it is important to realise that as people age their faces evolve asymmetrically. This causes everyone to sing slightly out of the side of their mouth. Each side is always different. One side is usually brighter than the other. If the voice is inherently dull, you'll want the bright side and if the voice is generally thin you'll want the meatier side.

Finding the best side makes a lot of difference. I sing about 10 degrees to the left for example.

I just bought and read (actually re-read)this book. IMHO, this is incredibly deep and gives some very unique insights not even hinted at elsewhere (such as the effect of facial/vocal asymmetry and contributions of auditory/"gravity" interactions. Music/recording is an avocation for me (although one I'm passionate about). In real life I'm a neurologist at a neuroscience institute in the US and one of my research areas is in the neurobiology of music. Many of the observations about psychoacoustics Stavrou makes just amaze me. I consider this book an absolute gem.

Just thought i'd add that i've had this book for a year or so now, and have constantly found it very useful indeed. I would honestly recommend it to anyone with an interest in developing themselves within the recording/mixing field.

Top job, stav!!
