Is this the Definitive Design?

Hi Ian and Martin,
I don't want to come across as unappreciative, but I'm
concerned this may be the definitive design for the new forum. Maybe it's a Bangle shock
(Bangle is BMW's chief designer), but I found the previous forum interface far more
elegant (and less cluttered, I might add).
Any chance of this new interface
being streamlined in the (near) future, or is this set in stone?
For instance,
I find the Post Icons and IGs quite distracting when I type (but perhaps this is
deliberate?). Also, the display of posts in the Forums is well, as I implied earlier,
less timeless Armani and more Versace in diapers (if you'll pardon the comparison).
On the plus side, I like the preview feature (I'm a terrible typist).
Thanks!
Axel

A good point, and well made! The old forum was the most elegant forum out of all
I've had the (dis)pleasure to see... but now this one looks almost as cluttered as all the
others. That's progress

I miss the ability to quote from several posts at the same time. With the old design, you
were in a different windows than the posts, so you could cut-paste as much as you wanted.
Now you only have the post you reply to. Other forums have the whole history of the thread
(with the original on top, the others starting with the most recent).
Also
having the UBB codes right above the post window is easier IMHO.
And can you
disable that "I want to preview" button by default?

Yes, well said Havoc - I second that too! I'd like to disable the "Add signature to
this post" by default myself.

This can be done: click "My Home" in the yellow bar near the top
of the page, then edit your display preferences, it's down at the bottom somewhere.
Can't help with all the other probs though

I generally agree with this. You can, however,
open a new window (so you have multiple windows of the forum open from which to work).
One benefit of the way it's set up now is that if you mess up, you can often hit the back
button and not lose your text. But I would agree that, as far as the above issues are
concerned, there could be more elegant ways to handle these things.
Good
comments. Maybe this thread should be moved to the feedback forum?

Thanks for the comments folks - I'm quite sure there will be tweaks along the way, but
just at the moment there's an awful lot going on. However, as cc. kindly said (please note
his new third character - he gets touchy if you leave it out), there are quite a few user
options available to customise your experience. Don't forget to read the FAQ as
well (www.soundonsound.com/forum/faq.php) for more info. Martin

Found that also in the
meantime. You can edit the sort order, signature and preview. So it seems to be tought out
very well. Just a pity the defaults are not what we like
As for opening in a different window to quote from all posts, I agree, it can be worked
around. Just that I'm not used to do it for this forum, so I need to be trained.
So, if the "remember me" selection would work, 80% of our complaints would be solved. I
noticed there was a new selection right now, "stay logged in" or something like that. SO I
guess the site-admins are beavering away...

Right click... Open in new window.
Of course you need to have emacs open as well... so that you have some place to write.
