"Across the Ocean" - Vangelis inspired
      #430742 - 07/03/07 05:13 AM
Here is another song that I am working on. I named it "Across the Ocean". As you will hear, it is inspired by Vangelis. I am using the Arturia CS-80V soft synth for the lead horn.

While this is just a snippet of a song right now, the final piece will be about 6 minutes in length.

Thanks for listening!

Heya SeaDargon

I love Vangelis' music.
Your piece def has a nice beginning that could go many places.
IMO, PLEASE ditch the drums, they Really detract from the piece and make it sound cheap.
Have No drums nor percussion on it at all, it will then carry a Lot of feel and depth.

Hey Table for Two,

Thanks very much for your comments.

I guess the effect I am after in this piece would be a hint of a beat, but not a true bass and snare bit. I'm thinking along the lines of Vangelis' "Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria", the last track on his 1492 Conquest of Paradise album.

I will try both removing them entirely and perhaps also using a very low key beat to see how it works. I'll be sure to post an update.

Thanks!

I agree with table for two - the percussion doesn't seem to fit. What are you using for that?

Loving the melody tho - it is very Vangelis - nice work :-D

The Arturia instruments are great aren't they? I use them a lot....

Thanks guys,

Ya, the percussion is not right. I used a built in kit on the ES called "Ambient" for the drums. I'm going to also pull back on the CS-80 horn a bit. I listened to it in the car on the way to work this morning and on some notes my fillings vibrated. A little too loud.

I am going to go back to the drawing board and see what I can do.

Lunik, I really do like the CS-80. I have always been a fan of its unique sound, but for years never knew it was the CS-80.

Okay, I went back and made a few changes:

Here's what I did:

- redid the CS80 horn track and pulled back the volume
- added piano track
- added male choir backing
- replaced drum track with a low key percussion sound
- added compression to the final output

I've never used a compressor before so I don't know much about tweaking them. If anyone has some advice regarding compression, I would be interested to learn.

Thanks again for your comments and for listening!

Considering "Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria" is one of my favourtie Vangelis tracks,
also the opening and closing themes to Bounty

... got high hopes for your track SeaDragon

TBH it doesn't need the delayed percussion at all.
The track is strong enough without it and becomes weaker when percussion is added.

Nice work & on the basement too !
