      #44603 - 03/11/04 02:00 AM
Hi'
I am start using effect pedal for my music. hope you don't mind to give me some idea. I was using software fx but it's dosen't seem right for me. so I think I want to start with some of pedal fx which is necessary for my live setup.

1) I'm looking for distortion, reverb, and delay effect. which one you guys think it 's good for me. I'm do ambient and electronic music.

2) Do you think I better go with multi-effect or reverb+delay rack?

3) I am interested in MXR-ditortion, Elector harmonix-Big Muff, Memory Man, and Holier Grail...what do you think about these pedal? Could you please give me more comparable stuffs.

thanks

The yellow MXR distortion is a classic... but i'd try the "GD2 Creamtone and the "Barber "Black" overdrive units as well.. The GD2 has a gorgeous range and keps the original tone of the guitar really well..Its not one for out and out distortion but has a wonderful overdriven sound... The Barber Black sits between the MXR and the GD2 in terms of sound...

The Frantone range are interesting as well given your field of music.. the "PeachFuzz" and the "Creampuff" pedals might suit your needs perfectly... ye si know the names are sad you should see the olours of them as well... however having tried them in the USA they are seriously nice pedals...plus they do have a definite...Oooooooo where did you get that from value...

Reverb and echo wise... its more difficult... I have a feeling an old tape echo like the rolands or even an echoplex might be exactly the sound you are after... The thing is with tape echos unlike digital their restricted bandwidth suits the guitar perfectly... the digi ones can be a tad strident... also any stray artifacts with tape echoes tend to actually add to the sound whereas digital ones just go click fizz and sound like they are broken...

Reverb is more difficult to advise on..pressed id say go for a second hand but clean Digitech Studio quad 4.. they have some great reverbs on them and some other interesting efx you can chain together... chorus flange etc ... all far cleaner than most foot pedals...

The foot pedal flanger IMHO is the blue MXR from the 70s... although instead of the 20-50 quid they were 5 yrs ago they are now more like 150-200.. even then, thats actually not that bad when you consider in 1976 they were 220 quid new..

Are you after the FX units for making guitar based ambience?

The basic effects you need for guitar ambience are:

Octave up pitch shift
Phaser/Heavy Chorus
Delay (longer the better for large washes of sound)
Reverb

If your after a rack unit something like the TC Electronic Fireworx or G Force will suit you down to the ground, although there are plenty of others to try to.

As for the FX units, the MXR Distortion + and Big Muff pedals are classic, however beware of adding loads of gain if your building loops as it can rob to much from the sound.

The EH Holy Grail is a nice reverb to complement a good amp, but for ambience it may be to "light", and not give a strong enough presence.

You can of course get a few pedals to cover the above, for example Boss and Digitech make a pedal to cover each sound above, MXR phasers are highly touted (especially the origonals) and Ibanez make some very individual sounding units for adding SFX.

Was it for effecting guitar or other instruments?

The reverb off the HolyGrail is horrendous, I'd definitely suggest that you use a rack processor for reverb. I have an old ART that has a very good spring algorithm and is relatively cheap, the Alesis Microverb is also decent. If you want to go quality I've used the TC Electronic G force - especially lush choruses and reverbs.
As far as distortions are concerned I recommend the Sans Amp TRI-AC. For the money ($150) you get a Vox type, California (Mesa) and British (Marshall) voicings, all switchable and with speaker emulation when DI'd. That beats MXR in my book.

I'll throw in my suggestion for the line 6 delay and modulation stomp boxes. Both our guitarists use these and we get some superb sounds out of them.

More info here

The filter pedal is also very good for the slightly more unusual sounds and our old keyboard player used to have one in his rig. No idea what the distortion one is like though, we're happy enough using valve amps for that!

Anyone with thoughts on the Akai Headrush 2?

I see its has independent outs for the four "heads" which could be usefull to me with my multiple amps.

Some comparative analysis of likes would be usefull.

Say a recorded clean sound into the latest crop of delays with tweaking and then a distorted sound, all in one place, compare and contrast.

You might want to take a look at the Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere. It makes funny, spacy, wobbly noises (intnded to mimic a leslie cabinet) and is often prized in ambient circles.

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

The four outputs on the Akai only work in tape delay mode, where you can change the tape motor speed etc.

I'm tempted to get one for the same reason, could be a very handy 4 way splitter??

Funky shade of blue to..!

I see since the other day the price has appreciated on this unit, wheras it was 100 its now 150.

They change its name to the Bumrush 2 no doubt.

I think they know what they can do with their pedal then.

Isnt this a problem with the retailers putting the manufacturers out of business or at the very least interfering with cash flow.
