External sound cards new
      #44556 - 02/11/04 11:53 PM
I'm looking to buy an external sound card, and have been recommended the Creative Audigy NX. The sole reason for buying it is that I'm trying to get rid of my old 4-track and move to recording music via Cubasis (and eventually Cubase).

So, is the Audigy NX any good for this purpose? If not, can anyone recommend any (preferably relatively cheap) alternative?

Audigy has a pretty bad reputation around here.
I suggest you to do a search on soundcards here (or even better on v2 forum), usb or firewire. There's a LOT (but really a lot) of stuff on all sorts of soundcards here.

Do a search, you'll find tons of stuff, not entirely sure how helpful it will be though.

One pointer. The audigy is basically a gamers soundcard tarted up as something more. If you look at the adverts in SOS and see what's being sold at the entry level you'll find things that are more suitable.

Here's what I had to say about the NX in PC Notes February 2004:

"Creative have joined Edirol in releasing a USB 2.0 audio peripheral. The Audigy 2 NX is about £85 including VAT, comes in a slick-looking compact plastic and metal casing, but does need an external power supply. It's bundled with an identical remote control to the Audigy 2 ZS I reviewed in SOS October 2003, and features mic, line, and optical S/PDIF inputs, along with optical and coaxial S/PDIF outputs, plus four stereo analogue outputs, making it compatible with 7.1 surround. The ASRC (Asynchronous Sample Rate Conversion) engine is still in evidence, providing characteristic high-end frequency response ripples at 44.1kHz and 48kHz, although in 24-bit/96kHz the engine is bypassed for a flatter response and significantly lower background noise. However, WDM but no ASIO drivers are supplied, and no MIDI I/O, making the NX less suitable for many musicians than other members of the Audigy range."
