'Splitting' a Type 0 midi file into a multitrack Type 1?
      #452659 - 26/04/07 07:51 PM
Hi, I'm guessing this is a type of question as old as the trees, however being relatively (well, 10 years or so) new to such matters its not something I've come across before.

Here's the deal. I have been delivered a midi file of a piece of music which the client wants cleaned up, made to sound 'better' etc. However, their source gave them a Type 0 midi file, so everything is all in one midi track - rendering my ability to do anything useful to it more or less impossible.

In the abscence of being able to source a Type 1 file, is there any way for the type 0 file to be easily 'split' into separate channels? Any useful tools either in the form of 3rd party software, or features within Cubase/Nuendo which will enable me to do this? Is this actually something that is at all possible?

Thanks!

yes, from within Cubase you can do this..

from the MIDI menu, select Disolve part.

it may all be one object, but it should still be in 16 channels.

Demix by channel.

job done.

the long way is simply to chose events of each channel in the event editor, and copy/paste them into new objects per channel.

which means the same thing, but is done by you rather than automatically.

Marvellous. Thanks chaps! I was afraid for a while that once 'compressed' into a type 0, you couldn't extract it into a multi track.

Interesting to think midi files are 'a bit before my time'. Sorry if that makes the rest of you feel old

That's OK Sonny. Let me just set down here with ma trusty walkin' stick (leg's never been the same since the rhumatism set in!) and I'll tell you all about the good ol' times we used to have with tape loops and razor blades . . .
