Transfer & translate to PC? new
      #459622 - 12/05/07 06:13 PM
I thought I had lost (thrown out) my old Cubase 2 & 3 Atari disks... but clearing out the attic I rediscovered them.

This makes the prospect of restoring this old material tantalisingly close... but is it possible?

Are there utilities to get the data onto a PC and then translate into modern versions of Cubase?

Its just data so this should be possible. But I will need the utilities - if they exist.

Hi MCL,
this should be quite easy. However, you'll need an Atari to do this as well. Simply format a disk on your PC and the Atari will read it- but the PC won't read Atari fomatted disks. Then copy the Atari Cubase files onto disk and load them into Cubase on your PC. I'm not a Cubase user myself (someone else here may be able to give the definitive answer) but I understand that more modern versionns of Cubase can read early files, just in the same way that versions of Logic (up to v.5?) can load Notator files.

Hope this helps,
Dave.

Hi again MCL,
I've just had Barrie on the phone today with a few more tips, as he's the forum Atari Cubase expert!

He says that is you're getting an early STFM the TOS version won't read PC formatted disks. So if you haven't already got one, an STE with version TOS 1.06 at least will do the job.
Another way around that I use is an Atari prog called DFormat, which can write DOS and AFE bootfiles for reading by PCs or Macs.
Barrie also advises that if you've used (ahem) dodgy copies of Cubase in the past

They can give problems when being read by official copies!

Also keep in mind that the soundcard on your PC is certainly optimised for GM, so if you used pre or non GM modules in the past (I still do!! ) then all the program changes will be different.

Get back to me if you woulld like the link to Dformat -I forget where I got it from but it's probably from the Atari Launchpad site.

Best wishes,

Dave

Ps. Thanks to Barrie as always..

Nearly forgot-don't forget that Ataris use DS/DD disks, not HD ones.
A Mega STE can handle HD ones, and PCs should handle both.

Dave.

Dformat can be found here: http://www.umich.edu/~archive/atari/Diskutils/

for those who need it.

GAH!

This doesnt look good. I do not have an Atari

There is no way to have a PC read Atari disks? I thought GemExplorer would do that?

Originally I had an Atari 1040STE which I replaced with a MegaSTE (or whatever it was called!). I used hard drives for both but backed up everything to floppy. Since the Mega was my last Atari, I expect the floppies to be in that format.

My Cubase kit was all above board. I had this large MIDI interface with the key (dongle) slots - four of them if memory serves. I ran several pieces of kit from the Atari - no GM in sight

On the Cubase side of things it seems I need VST v5 to be able to convert to a file version of Cubase that is compatible (convertable) to modern versions.

But the Atari side is looking doom and gloom

But thanks for your replies so far!

Gemulator anyone?

Has anyone had experience with this?

As I delve into my old gear I have found some material in Hybrid Arts Edit Track format!
