Organ Module Recommendations new
      #471558 - 11/06/07 11:20 AM
A friend of mine is looking for a module to use as a more transportable replacement for his rather fragile Farfisa Compact.

Any suggestions?

New or s/h? Budget?

If he wants something cheap n cheerful then I'd look for a s/h Emu Vintage Keys which had various organ sounds. The more expensive option might be to get a Roland JV / XP box and fit the expansion board - can't remember if it's Sounds of the 60s or the keyboard one that has organ sounds.

The EMU B3 module is all Hammond sounds and thus better than the Vintage Keys if you are just after a Hammond sound. The Roland JV expansion board with a lot of organ on is the sounds of the 60's one (plus electro-pianos and some melotron). However its quite limiting as there are only quite a few samples that are then treated to make them sound different. But it does have some Farfissa and Vox samples on it as well.

Does he want to keep the Farfissa sound? If so, NI's B4 with the tonewheel expansion pack (I think this is standard with the latest version) running on a laptop is possibly his only option.

For other Hammond sound modules there are the Voce, Oberheim/Viscount and Hammond's own modules, Roland's rack versions of their VK7 and VK8 organs, plus Nord's Electro Rack. Do an article search in SOS on "B3" and most of these have been reviewed.

If you want hardware, it's the creamware B4000 Organ module you'll need. There's hands-on drawbars, etc... It sounds exactly like a B3 (with a leslie), even emulating worn keys/tuning. It's modelled rather than sampled, which is a bonus, of course.

I've used the virtual version for a while, now, and it sounds great. The hardware version has all the drawbars, etc...

You'll need a midi keyboard to go with it, of course, but it's possibly the best gigging solution.

Check it out, here!

I don't really think laptops are his thing, so it needs to be hardware.
I know there are several Hammond-type modules. I have the Oberheim myself, so I might get him to try that and see what he thinks. However, it is really the Farfisa sound he is after.

try the nord c1. it's portable and has a dedicated farfisa model built in, as well as the hammond and vox options
