I was very excited when these two arrived, especially as I'll never be able to afford the real thing, well, the Moog anyway. Initially I thought that the Moog would get the most use, but the reverse is now true. As with the real life counterparts the differences soon became apparent, I now realise why the Moog was more of a "traditional musicians" instrument, and the 2600 leaned more towards experimental music.
I really find it a struggle to come up with extremely abstract/random patches on the Moog, you can, but it takes a lot longer, whereas the ARP seems to do that very well indeed with little effort, it has a tremendous sequencer which when combined with the Sample And Hold module can really go off into the nether regions !
The bottom line is that the Moog doesn't get used that much at all now, but every time I use the ARP I come up with interesting patches at the drop of a hat. I suppose this is normal with any instrument it's what you feel drawn to, and feel at home with.
What I don't like about the Moog is the fact that the Sample And Hold modules and LFO's all seem to be tied to the same internal clock, so you can't have one module running at a different speed to the others, a severe limitation. But you can set up random modulations on the ARP, and run the sequencer in random mode at a different speed. Also, the 2600 does respond and feel like the real thing sometimes, especially when using that old trick of feeding outputs back to inputs, which produces some stunning sounds, this doesn't work on the Moog in such an effective way, and most of the time just produces nasty sinuous digital feedback or it just cuts out altogether.
I would like to own an ARP2600 one day soon, thats my goal, I feel that if I could have afforded one when it first came on to the market it would have been my instrument of choice. This isn't one of those "oh everything will be perfect when type wishes" I have my sound and my style already, it would just be nice to have the real thing, thats all. A very inspiring instrument, and a beautiful sound.

Tony, no that's definately the Arp2600. You'll recognise it instantly when you can load the video clip. He's playing the keyboard strapped around his neck, and the synchesizer itself is behind him, connected via a lead.

A fantastic track, and a fanstastic funky sound. I can fully understand why Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder both used them. In fact, the patch on the video sounds very similar to one that you hear quite a lot in the early Stevie Wonder stuff.

I'd love an Arp2600, too. However, I fear that I would have to shed a lot of other stuff fit it into my studio. The SW version looks like a great compromise!

Yes, but he did appear on Whistle Test with the Pro Soloist, but maybe he was miming !

I'd rather be using this any day of the century.........

I've not seen this group before. Is the blond haired chap THE Edgar Winter? My, my, he is a multi-talented soul!! Keyboards, sax and drums! A man after my own heart.

I have Analog Factory and I use it loads, glad you are enjoying your new toys Tony!

There loads of very useful sounds and some very strange sounds.

When I get my new computer I'm going to get the TimeWARP2600, I think it's less prone to bugs than the Arturia version, and more authentic, but its very processor hungry, and requires quite a powerful computer.

JMJ also likes using it for bass on various albums eg the bass seq on oxygene 8 (1997).
The drone beginning of Equinoxe 1 though that might have been done on a CS60.
He didn't use a CS80 until 1997, mainly cause imo it was Vangelis' sig sound.

The filter sweeps on Oxygene 1 could also poss be the ARP.

The Jarre synth freaks, who are a bit anal abouth synths JMJ used, prefer the TimeWARP2600.

The second solo (the extended one) on Oxygene 2 also on an Arp2600 I think.

That Edgar Winter clip is great. About six years ago a neighbour barged his way into my house, sat me down with a beer and made me watch a DVD. Of just that. Fantastic. I didn't realise until then that he is brother to Johnny Winter, of 'New York New York' fame. And no, not the Frank song, you toad!

Les, JMJ's done a lot of cheese of late but his early stuff is imo simlpistic elegance, beauty.

There's stuff on various EM albums by various artists in the 90's and nowadays
which are imo just progression of JMJ did in 1976,79, 1981, 1984.

He should have stopped after 1990's Waiting for Cousteau,
the 46min title track being imo a superb minimalist piano ambient piece.

Or he should have taken a raincheck.

Instead he got sucked in by what other were doing, when he should have just concetrated on what he does.

The college that the two run around in Chariots is, I think, Trinity 1st court, Cambridge. It's that or John's.

One of the runners (I can't remember which one) studied at Caius College, but Caius would not let them film there, so they used Trinity Hall, opposite, instead.

I was at Trinity Hall in the mid-eighties. My best mate (a non-musician, and something of a libertine) was at Caius at the same time as me, although we met much later, and in the North East of England. Small world, eh!

He was the one who told me that Caius wouldn't let the film crew into the College, but I always maintain that they chose Tit Hall because it looks prettier. It's our private quarrel.

I bought Yazoo's two albums when they first came out, and recently I've bought the great hits cd (which is just a double album of those two albums).

You talk about JMJ's minimalism, but VC was just superb at that sort of stuff. Simply genius! And I do not use that word lightly, ever!

What I would call a very "pedestrian" use of the snthesiser these days, but very entertaining none-the-less, and I freaked out to it many a time.....

Hollow Sun, I bought my first VCS3 in 1976, with the DK2 keyboard and a whole bunch of "Presto-Patches" cost me £500 from Kennards Music in Canterbury.........sigh.......
Getting back to the 2600, Brian Eno did some great work with it, especially "On Land"

RE...ARP2600....I've suddenly had an uncontrollable rush (could be the coffee) I want one, and I want it now...otherwise I'll scream an scream and scream and jump up and down uncontrollably and wet my pants.

At first, I thought your ARPAngel was because of the ARP.

Haven't seen one (2600 or 2500) in RL Music recently.

TFT, their was one on Ebay recently, but as usual, it was pretty rough, they are a bit dodgy, as some of the circuits are encapsulated in resin, to stop people finding out whats inside ! so when they need servicing its a real, er, pain, to say the least. Plus, some people muck about with them, and modify them in all sorts of daft ways, so I'll be lucky to find a good one at an affordable price. I was offered an orange one 7 years ago, but turned it down, typical, it was immaculate in every way, and was only a £1000 quid, should have bought it.

Though I know that cambridge was also used for some of the filming.

It is a bit like Midsomer Murders.. a scene recently was supposed to Oxford station, but was infact Slough station!

These locations that arent what they claim to be really stand out if you know the areas........

It is a great beast.

I sold one of two I own and I can never stop going back to it.
The patching is semi-modular so much easier to use than full modular systems.

I have a System 100 (all modules) and between the two I get all the mad ass sounds I need.

A Synthi AKS or VCS3 would be a great addition but I rarely see them for sale and when they do come up they are top money.

Maybe I'll start a Zuk Buchla fund and be done with it.

From a documentary I saw on Floyd awhile ago, the Synth I am thinking of is not a VCS...

The guy in the programme played five notes and then sped them up to get the sound that I posted above...

I think you have to keep all of this in perspective. A lot of these old synth's were very good at just one or two great sounds, but worth having for those alone, it all depends on your priorities, and the size of your wallet.
I wouldn't, say, go out and buy an AKS or a VCS3 for instance, not now, as my computer with all of it's software does all of that and goes way beyond. But sometimes an instrument comes out that is truly inspiring, like a Steinway piano or a classic instrument of any kind, it just has a magic about it, the ARP2600 is that instrument for me. It will be something different for others of course, but that's my love. I could quite happily be locked in a room for the rest of my life and be happy composing my music with just an ARP2600

Even JMJ stopped using VCS3's on his albums after Oxygene & Equinoxe.
except for Oxygene 7-13 (1997).

It would have been overkill to use it on all his albums.

I personally don't have use for its laser, space, warble effects.

TFT, my Arturia ARP2600 is good, it's got most of the sound there, OK, so its not 100%, but, unlike the original, if I want to flip it into poly mode I can ! and I can midi it to my DX7 etc. Plus, no hefty servicing bills. But I would till like an original, and it's limitations wouldn't be an issue.

Now, when I meet this rich divorcee..........a couple of other things to put on the shopping list, a Buchla 200e, and a Steinway Model D Concert Grand, thats all, I'm easily satisfied

Nope, definitely the VCS3. I you watch the Classic Albums programme on DSOTM you'll see Dave Gilmour describing making the track 'On the Run' using a VCS3. Arturia may well have a preset for the MM called that too though...
