MP3 -> Flash new
      #41272 - 26/10/04 09:33 PM
I'd like to add a flash object, playing a looped MP3, to my website. I don't particularly want to shell out for Macromedia Director for something as simple as this. I know of the excellent script-based SWF creator "SSWF", but it currently only supports uncompressed WAVE files...

So, anyone know of any software out there that can produce SWFs that do this?

Chris, have you checked out:

http://www.flashkit.com/movies/Sound/Players/

I'm pretty sure there's some Flash objects on there that can do what you want. I had a little look into it a while back looking for similar things for my website but decided against Flash in the end.

Bear in mind that translating compressed formats won't give you great sound quality. Going from a WAV would certainly be preferable.

Perhaps I should have been more careful with my choice of words. I mean specifically embedding an MP3 in an swf, with a simple PLAY/STOP interface, or the same but refering to an MP3 on a web server. Not reconverting from an MP3 to anything...

I've seen that FlashKit site, and it potentially seems to have the sort of thing I'm after... but what do I do with FLA files? Again, I don't have, or want Director!

Cheers for the responses though, guys.

First off.. you don't need director.. that's a whole other beast.

you might however need Macromedia flash (to open .fla files) to tackle this problem. I don't know if there are any other programs around which can do this without needing flash at some point.

I don't think Flash actually does anything to audio files, it just acts as a wrapper, so audio quality degradation won't be an issue.

I think you can only stream MP3's in flash. And if you define a stream, flash doesn't touch the audio (Not sure, long time ago I did this).. Imported audio in flash however is compressed to mp3 (using the fraunhoffer pro codec, so that's as good as it gets for mp3, no complaints there..)
