Waves presets - from Pro Tools to Cubase?
      #478182 - 26/06/07 01:12 PM
Hi guys,
I've been watching Charles Dye's mix it like a record and on the ROM content it includes all his sessions (on pro tools) and the presets used for his plug ins.
I'm currently using Cubase on windows XP and have some of the waves plug ins for which presets are included and I'd like to be able to load these presets into my own project, however I don't seem to be able to do this.
The presets with the Charles Dye projects are in a .tfx format and while reading through a different sound forum I discovered that if I renamed the files with the .pst extension then that would make the presets transferable between Pro Tools and Cubase. But this isn't working for me either.
Has anyone got any ideas that could help me or is what I'm trying to do impossible?

It's straightforward on a Mac, so I can't help you- I suggest you take your question over to the PC Users forum.

I'd be surprised if changing the filename extenders worked - I suspect what you mean is that if preset file names end in an extension of '.tfx', Pro Tools will recognize them when running on either PC Windows or the Mac platform.

However, as far as I'm aware VST format Waves plug-ins have their own .xps format that's completely different from the Pro Tools .tfx format, while the plug-ins themselves may differ in some respects between these two formats.

Mind you, if Tomás is correct that this change is easy on a Mac then it should be similarly easy on a PC - assuming that Waves .pst preset files for their VST format plug-ins are identical for both Mac and PC (which I think is the case).

So how do you change from .tfx to .pst so easily on the Mac Tomás?

OK, took a while but I've figured this out while typing my reply...

Answer- you don't change the filetype at all. Waves plugins use their own format. This is part of the "waveshell" design. The Waves plugins have their own load and save menus that are entirely independent of the host DAW.

In Cubase (at least up as far as SX, when I stopped using it) the standard VST save/ load buttons appear in addition to the Waves own menu items, maybe that's causing you confusion. The VST waveshell is a bit of a kludge compared to the RTAS.

So just use the Save/ Load buttons at the top of the plugin window, not the VST "load file..." etc. menu at the bottom of the plugin window.

I think that's it- let us know how you get on!

Cheers for the replies guys!

However the problem seems to be that whenever you click on the 'load' button within the waves plug in, the only file options is gives you is for either .xps or .pst formats. It's impossible to search or load any other file type, therefore making it impossible to load anyway of the presets which are .tfx

OK, I'll do a transfer from SX to PT and I'll get back to you.

BTW, I don't think much of Charles Dye, if "Livin' La Vie da Loca" (sic) is anything to go buy... Michael H Bauer, now there's a mixer!

Exactly my point - I still think this is a Pro Tools/VST issue - if you're using Waves plug-ins inside Pro Tools and save a preset using Pro Tools it will be in .tfx format, while if you use Waves plug-ins inside Cubase and use Cubase to save the preset it will be in a totally different .fxp format.

I agree with Tomas if presets are saved with the alternate internal formats used by Waves plug-ins (.xps or .pst) they should be cross-compatible, but not when saved using the host application's own formats.

Could be, but I'm gonna check it anyway. From PT to SX, not the other way around as I stated above

idea for the OP, you could get yourself over to charle's dye's forum, mix it like a record, on the womb forums: http://womb.mixerman.net

there are a lot of pro tools users over there and this kind of thing, especially with reference to the MiLAR DVD, gets talked about quite a lot.

Cheers for all the replies guys, hoefully someone can workout a way of getting around this..

ps Tomas - My best mate's band called Kharma 45 (who I used to do FOH for) had their debut album mixed by Michael Brauer last year. It's due out in September and I have to agree with you, the man is a legend! It sounds fantastic.

Ya, I've never heard a mix by him that was not fantastic. And I've heard a lot. Not that he gives a toss about my opinion He did a guest spot on gearslutz before, check it out, very good.
