John Frusciante tone on BSSM new
      #484423 - 10/07/07 10:26 PM
Does anyone know how i can come close to this sound? I've heard that he plugged staright into the desk, which explains the heavy compressed sound.

Im thinking about the "I could have lied" solo in particular....

If i had Jonny Greenwoods fingers, Stevie Ray's Soul and a little bit of Hendrix vibe......

IIRC John picked up a Boss CS3 compressor pedal for this album, certainly from what I've read from articles on the web.

He's also a committed fan of vintage amps and guitars, so would doubt he plugged into the desk direct - nothing to say he didn't though!

You might get better response from the guitar forum, or from a fan website like guitargeek.com

It might have been direct into the desk for Under the Bridge, but for the lead tones, I think he used old Marshalls. There is a DVD (Funky Monks?) with lots of footage of the recording.

Cheers,

He plugged in direct for Funky Monks. Other than that Fender guitars and Marshall amps.

As with all great guitar tones, it's all in the fingers.

Yep, also that blue Fender Jaguar probablly played a good deal with the sound. If you haven't, check out is first solo albulm, man, lo-fi has never sounded so high-fi. Beautiful. Makes you feel silly to be so concerned with gear
when its all about emotion. I have ALL his music and met him in Lafayette, la. after he quite the peppers. We talked about painting and art.

I've just remembered that John has run two distinct guitar setups when recording, the Marshall for the rockier sounds, and a Fender silverface stack with a Boss DS2 for cleaner sounds with the Gretch White Falcon.

Not sure if he used this 2nd setup for BSSM, may have just been the vintage Fenders and the old Marshall stacks.
