How do YOU listen to music? The Facebook generation answers...

Spotted this in a survey on Facebook (social networking site). It asked how people
listened to music; the answers were broken down by various categories, perhaps the most
interesting was by age: Over 70% of the youngsters listening to
MP3 formats, and hardly any to CDs. Amazing how fast things change

I'm in the 25+ group, and the only reason I use my iRiver to listen to music is because I
can't take my home theater system when I go mountain biking. The quality of the audio path
from source to ear of typical MP3 systems is not quite adequate for me. And I suspect
that's largely due in part to learning how to mix audio, which makes one slightly pickier
when it comes to neutrality =) In the home theater system, I use a traditional
CD carousel. One of these days I hope to add a FLAC-based HDD or solid-state
player to my HT system that is automatically synced with my computer, and have the ability
to buy and download full 5.1 albums from the Internet! Maybe when MP3 players
pay a bit more attention to quality than features, I'll have another look. Of course, I
understand I am in the extreme minority in my age group

That's interesting. It doesn't say what format the computer listening is in - I guess
the large majority is mp3 - but I listen to all my music from my computer and I have it on
there as 16/44 wavs.

No, just deaf. I notice that the survey doesn't include ear trumpet as an option

I wouldn't read too much into this at all. It's typical survey skewage and not
representative without further qualification.
The only thing one can
extrapolate from the figures, is that most of those who use Facebook (who are young
anyway) and who took the time to fill in the survey seem to listen on an MP3 device.
Beyond that it's speculation.

I am the facebook generation, 19/student! My preferences: CD's or vinyl
(dependent on genre) first choice, through decent hifi or monitor speakers MP3 where
portability is an issue (i.e when running. If I am going somewhere with a bag, the cd
walkman and sennheiser earbuds come with me) Web radio (if I forget my cds) Cassette (in the car) Radio (if all else fails)

Trouble is, people are generally happy to buy what they are told too. I don't mean this as
a conspiracy it's just they way people work and how marketers have taken advantage of
that. I do it for example with soap powder. I really really don't want to spend any time
giving the soap powder I buy any serious consideration. I'm happy to grab what's on the
shelf in the supermarket. Give The Kids computers that play music, a means of
finding music with them (be iTunes or Limewire) and a reason to sit in front of them a lot
(like social networking sites like Facebook or Myspace or watching general trivia on
YouTube) and they'll end up mostly listening to music on computers! Tell them iPods are
cool (which they are) and make it easy to transfer music between it and the aforementioned
computer (which it is) and they'll use iPods to listen to music too! Above a
certain quality fidelity doesn't really come into it. I can hear the difference between
most MP3s and CDs but that's not to say most MP3s sounds awful. They don't. Jim.

Curiosly, a lot of people I meet seem to own some kind of ipod or other mp3 device which
they claim to be "unable to live without", but when you ask what type of music they are
into, or who their favorite band is, they are literally unable to answer with anything but
"oh you know, anything really" or similarly non descript statement. Don't make
the mistake of concluding that because kids these days seem to be inseperable from their
portable music players that they have a greater love or understanding of music than
previous generations. They are still listening to commercial guff put out by the big
labels which bears an equally small relation to real music as the 7"s you probably bought
when you were 13, just for more of the day.

maybe I'm being pedantic, but just coz you listen on an iPod, it doesn't mean you're using
mp3. The default is AAC, which is definitely better. I use mine with Apple lossless. The
supplied headphones are IMO a bigger source of quality loss than the file format.

The music played in my home comes from one of the following 3 sources:
1 -
MP3 library, piped around the house with various media players over wi-fi
2 -
Internet radio
3 - My own compositions from Logic
.... oh, and I am the
wrong side of 30 by the way
Ok, I know the sound quality from MP3's isn't
great - but it IS so convenient.

I don't really find genre to be that accurate or descriptive. I keep
seeing classifieds "Want to start an Alt-Rock band," which 10 years ago would've included
Counting Crows or Goo Goo Dolls, but which now seems to include many bands I'd call Heavy
Metal.
There's apparently a genre called Texas Music. I live in Texas, I make
music, but apparently it's not Texas Music because it's not country.
"Anything really" seems like an acceptable answer, as it barely makes more sense than
'acid punk' or 'nu-metal' or whatever the hell the current music magazines decided was a
category this week. Bands like the White Stripes are labeled as 'indie rock' while they're
on major labels. 'World music' is a similarly bullshit term regarding anything that didn't
come from Europe or America.
Don't take this the wrong way, I don't think
you're mistaken about the teens in any fashion, I just think it's a bit much to expect
from them, when they probably listen to a wide spectrum of sub-genres that add up to
'anything really' in their brilliant minds. Heck, you might be right; 'anything really'
probably means 'pop.'

I understand what you are saying, but I disagree. There is a big difference between
someone such as myself and probably many of you who likes many kinds of music from rock,
punk, electronica, classical to jazz and beyond, and makes a conscious effort to seek out
music which they will enjoy listening to, who can quite justifiably say they are into
"anything really" which really means "a bit of everything really" and someone who listens
to whatever the radio is playing that week, where "anything really" actually means
"nothing really".
On the subject of genres, personally I think they are a very
useful way of speeding up the process of finding exactly the music you want to listen to.
For example I know that I don't like "jump up" or "trance n bass", which are really
horrible (IMHO) generic types of drum and bass, however i'm mad for a bit of "gabber" or
"breakcore" or "techstep". Now how am I going to find music I like, or people will similar
tastes, if I just say I like drum and bass? Genres are heirachal (sp?) though, so as you
say, alt-rock, or indie or whatever are vauge umbrella terms, with little meaning.
Generally, I find that the more people are "into" their music, the further down the tree
of genres they understand, so whilst I may be able to chat merrily to my band about the
intricacies of "sludgecore" vs "grindcore" vs "metalcore", the average iPod joe probably
couldnt go beyond "metal" or "rock".
Maybe I am just elitist, but I am sick of
people on their myspace professing to be the greatest fan of some scene band (eg H.I.M),
but then being totally disinterested in any other similar music, unless MTV told them
otherwise.

Well, yes and no... Facebook does have a peak in university/college age group but the
next large group is older users. It's preferred by the 'adult users' over MySpace because
of the way it works. Or at least it was last week.

Sludgecore is like metalcore but really slow, see eyehategod or mistress on pandora for
examples. Grindcore is like metalcore, only it sounds more like grinding metal than music,
Pig Destroyer are a great example (prowler in the yard is an ace album).
A
random, I mean like on myspace when random idiots you have never met, add you to get the
amount of friends they have up and stuff like that.
