"Slump... it's a release"
      #49533 - 14/11/04 12:21 PM
Slump... it's a release

Not strictly a new track as this was mixed in 2002, but the next track in an ongoing series I will be adding to the Forum.

Since the only other track I've posted here was done entirely using Logic's metronome (The Klopfgeist Protocol) I thought perhaps you might be interested to hear what I can do when I'm allowed full use my real synths!

On "Slump... it's a release" you hear Fender Rhodes, K2000, ESQ1, Pulse, CZ101, Juno 106 and a Pro 5 (plug-in), along with acoustic percussion, Samplecell drums, spoken word samples and ambient sound FX. The whole thing was mixed live to DAT through a Mackie SR-24.4 on a Beige G3/266 Mac running Logic 4.8.

Comments & feedback welcome.

Thanks,

James

Very cool.

Nothing useful to add in terms of comments, but I really liked it.

Great key sounds. This is the first thing I have heard from you. I love the chilled overlapping of background voices and sounds. Needs a folksinger's voice though! Ha ha ( just kidding )

Very nice James...kind of 'spirit on '89' aswell. Reminds me a bit of a more hedonistic club i used to er..frequent back in the day. Very nice sounds. Everything fits together well.
It's funny. People listen to tracks like this and think.."Oh easy..i could make somthing like that no problem" but in fact this is a highly detailed piece of music and every musician i know wouldn't have a clue how to compose, sequence, arrange and mix something like this.

Like it...i wish i could arrange stuff this fluid...

Thanks very much!

You're certainly right about the detailed production - leaving aside whether anyone thinks it any good or not, I will say that this track took weeks and weeks of hard work to get to the finished piece it is now. There are a zillion little things spinning in and out all over the place and the mix took ages to get precisely right. I was big into automation already when I mixed this but it wasn't yet available in Logic 4.8 so Hyperdraw was very much my friend back then; that and heaps of MIDI automation - fades in/out, panning data, dynamic Sys-Ex and such like.

There's actually loads of audio tracks on there too which somehow I managed to squeeze out of my creaking Mac G3/266. Knowing what can be achieved by pushing even an old workhorse like this to the limit, I am always somewhat sceptical of folks who log on here and say "is a Dual G5 with Logic 7 powerful enough for my music needs?" when the reality is that it's very rarely the hardware that is the limiting factor, even for quite complex electronic stuff. (Hauls out old Forum cliche - George Martin produced the Beatles on a 4-track etc etc, but you get my point!)

very nice indeed,

excellent arrangement in particular.

sound wise there was one sound in particular really struck me... its a tinkly little arpeggiated synth line, running thru alot of the track, its right in there at the fade out aswell. Its got such an 'Underworld' feel to it, i could almost have sworn this was one their more mellower tracks!!!

great work, very obvious you know what youre doing there
cheers

Hey James,

Listening to the track at the moment ... really nice intro so far.

Nice arrangement. Production wise I am only listening on crappy phones ( at work ) but it sounds nicely balanced and full. It's plain to see that you know what you are doing 'tis true

I must admit that it is really nice to :

1. Hear some more of the mods tunes ( hint hint )
2. Find out that they have some interest in electronica

Nice one

Totally agree with you.

Cool track.

I want a beige mac.
A computer would be nice too.

I think I know the sound you mean - it was an ESQ1 run through my very lovely Roland RSP-550 Phaser, but it's intertwined with many other little sequences that all fade in and out and almost merge into one including K2000 Piano, good 'ole DX7 EP and NI Pro-52 plug-in all stuffed through millions of delays and stuff.

Call it my "Wall of Mellow Sequences" production method if you will! And you'll hear this effect even more to the fore in another track I'll post up here later on called "Risky Trains".

Thanks for the nice comments!

Superb.Drums, keys, percussion, great. Only thing I wasn't keen on was cymbal/gong at the end. Seemed a bit obvious.
