AKG solidtube noise problem

G'day mates!
I resently aquired a used AKG solidtube condenser mic, and it
seems to exhibit a noise problem (a buzzing sound with a fundamental around 50-60 hz)
The noise gets worse if I move my hand close to the grill, and gets a little bit
better if I touch the metal endpiece of the XLR cable connected to the mic.
The
"ground lift" switch on the microphone's power supply box has no effect on the noise.
Other condensers like my Rode NT1 works perfectly with the same constellation of gear
connected in the same way (audio AND power leads)
I don't have ground in my
studio mains supply.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what may be the
problem here, and as to what I can do to ammend it?
I think the installation of a decent ground would be my first priority. That may well cure
your hum problem, and it will certainly preserve your life!
It is also possible
that the valve in the mic is on its last legs and may need to be changed, or that one or
more of the power supply smoothing capacitors is failing.
But I'd get a
competent electrician to install a decent earthing system first.
hugh
