Hey, Awsome forum You probably
get this alot here...but I need to know how to remove one of the two, vocals, or
background music. The reason being is i'm trying to mash two songs together. Vocals I know
is pretty much impossible to remove completly, but i've never tried background music. Thanks for any and all help ^_^

If the songs aren't still in a multi-track platform - seems like a mission impossible
there.

aka the backing music (and vocals) are still on seperate tracks on a "mutli-track" system
(e.g. Cubase or a portastudio etc). If your songs are on CD's (or similar mixed-down
media)...you can't seperate them.

I think this is technically possible. get two bits of the track, one a verse
with the vocals and one a verse without the vocals. play them together at
exactly the same time but invert one of them. this should cancel out any
similar frequencies but leave those unfamiliar - ie the vocals. I've never
tried it but it should work in theory. But then, so should fusion, communism,
the NHS, me on Monday mornings, flat-pack furniture, PC's Good luck

A mate of mine got into mash-ups a while back, and in some situations he managed to fly in
the track with the vocal on it, beat match to the backing track, and then put fader
automation in around every word of the vocal so there was no backing track in between, and
then EQ'd tight notches out of it to get rid of the more prominent elements of unwanted
backing tracks. Provided the backing track you're over the top of has plenty going on, it
sounded OK on the few examples I heard. Remember - limitation spurs creativity - see what
you can do with pure fudge!

i'm having a hard time understanding what your talking about. If you could explain how to
do what your saying here, or IM me at SpitfireLighterX that'd be great. As far as audio
editing goes i'm a n00b. Any tutorials you think will help also please post a link. Thanks

now i don't want to upset anyone or be rude or anything but it seems to me that you're
attempting something technically difficult if not impossible, WiReDx, with little or next
to no audio editing knowledge whatsoever.
now i have no idea how these
'mash-ups' are created but i would guess that the 'pro' ones you hear on mtv and the radio
etc. are created with the extensive use of copies of the multitrack originals (separate
instruments on separate tracks) or at the very least unreleased instrumental versions or
something...something that captain-bedroom-studio would not have access to. obviously
it all started 'underground' with various people using the original singles etc. but i
would hazard a guess that they started with significantly more audio-app aware knowledge
than our friend here...
by all means attempt it if you genuinely have a
creative idea of 2 records that you think would sound excellent together but part of the
process of learning is trying to work stuff out for yourself. asking people on an internet
forum how to do basic tasks such as editing audio strikes me as somewhat lazy...
this forum and it's real-life magazine is an absolute gem of knowledge so if you do want
to learn, then you have at least come to the right place.
please don't be
offended. rant over. i'll go now.

Mr. WiReDx I believe this might be of interest to you in your quest for mashing
enlightnement: Mashing For Beginners The tutorial is biased towards using
Tracktion, but the principles can be applied to other DAWS and you can always get a copy
of the time limited Tracktion demo to try out your mashing technique if you need . . . Bon appetit, Dr. Bing Klazeby

If the vox are recorded in mono, you might be able to get away with the old phase flip
thing. If you switch the phase of one of the channels, and mix down to mono, this will
effectively remove the sound panned to the centre. Then its just a case of flipping this
signal and mixing it with the original.

My IM client is AOL. I tried reversing phases, and didn't get the effect I wanted. That
Tracktion program worked well though, thanks for the link. I recently got extremly busy
with a video editing project i'm doing and probably wont have time for this for awhile.
Thanks for the advice and time, i'll hit on audio editing later

A mate of mine is into mash ups. You should check out some the tracks on his site http://www.mash-ups.co.uk There are
also a few links to other sites that might help you out.
To answer your
question, I know he's spoken to me about using a number of different applications like
Acid and Soundforge and spend a lot of time cleaning up samples and pitchshifting/time
stretching. I'll be speaking to him later this week and will quizz him again.
Cheers,
Mike
