      #51418 - 18/11/04 10:22 AM
Hello all

I need your help, so here we go bit of a silly question really, i need to know how to rig up my compressor to my desk, i have just got hold of a cheap compressor just to subtley compress bass guitars, "DBX 266XL" my desk is "Mackie 1604 VLZ" i want to run the compressor into my desk so i can compress any of the tracks on my desk that i wish to i do not want to compress one individual track alone as i'm sure thats just a case of putting it into the "line in" on that that channel.
i have a rough idea but just need to clarify it (ie aux/send-returns) so if you could help me with a complete description of a patch of where to put my Y leads i would be most thankful, thanks again for reading my post and my ears are open..... Karl..

To be honest, you should only really compress individual channels or the whole mix. You can compress subgroups, but basically as a group I.E drums or vocals or strings, but not mixed.
If you have the compressor on an aux send, it won't do what you want basically!
You really have to use the "insert" jack on each channel for compressors...

Assign the channel you want to apply compression in to a sub pair (ie sub 1 and 2) then assign the subs to stereo master.
Put the compressor in those subs' insert points (the Y leads).
This is usually done to apply general compression to drums or background vocals submixes.
