Reading this months Studio SOS I noticed that the guys used a BBC test disc for reference
in the unfamiliar studio.
I've always used a familiar album but would like to
look into maybe getting something like this..
What do you guys use? Anything
available on the web?
Thanks,
Six

I suspect that many of us have put together our own collection of 'well-recorded audio
snippets' on a test CD to test out new gear or unfamiliar studio environments. If you do a search you'll find various links that include list of such well-recorded
albums in various genres that you can use to make up your own compilation. Here are a
couple: http://johnvestman.com/commercial_cds.htmwww.digido.com/misc-content/honor-roll.htmlMartin

The sad thing is although I
remembered reading the article, I was struck by the image at the top of the article of 4
CDs with different items in them.
I always thought that would be a brilliant logo
for a studio.
It's probably copyrighted to SOS, but if it's not I claim dibs
on it.
As is well known, claiming dibs is legally binding in all territories

Aside from
some test tones and things we rarely if ever use, it is simply a collection of familiar
and challenging music tracks that provide a consistent basis from which we can judge a
monitoring system and room. And the fact that it is a BBC in-house disc amuses PW almost
as much as when I wear tweed jackets and brogues
I did write a feature some time ago about making your own ref disc, and I see someone
has already highlighted it for you.
