Recording MIDI of softsynths played from GUI

This is almost certainly a very stupid question, so apologies in advance...
Many software synth plugins have a "keyboard" or similar as part of their graphical user
interface, which lets you play them (badly) with the mouse. Is it possible to record such
a performance as MIDI into Logic or Cubase ? I have NI Battery in mind, but I think the
question applies to many softsynths.
Or, perhaps the question I should be
asking is, how do folk to drum programing when carrying only a laptop (and no external
midi input device).

Logic has a "Caps Lock Keyboard" - press the capslock key, and a little window pops up.
You can now play notes via the computer keyboard, and record those just as it was a simple
external MIDI keyboard.
GUI keboards on plugins are simply for triggering (and
aesthetics), they don't ouput MIDI data in any way, so you can't record with them.
