Now I need a cigarette...

OK, I've just gone for it and ordered a 20" G5 iMac. Once the post-ordering glow has worn
off, anyone got any idea about delivery times from Apple Store? I read (here or DUC,
can't remember) someone mentioning getting theirs in 5 days on an estimated delivery of 2
to 3 weeks, which is what my order was quoted at. Anyone in the UK getting these through
quicker? Hopefully it'll be here before Christmas, at any rate.
This is going
to kill me!

You don't *need* a cigarette - you just think that you do Enjoy the toy when you get it -Paws

I don't want to put a downer on your excitement of ordering your new toy, but if your
expecting to get it before christmas you'll probably need a small miracle. And if its a
BTO you've got no chance. The iMac G5 20" is the hardest computer to get at the
moment second to the Powermac G5 dual 2.5. It is an amazing machine though and well worth
the wait. Hopefully you'll have it by the first week of Jan. TT

I recently order a G5 and it came exactly 2 weeks after I ordered it. Check the status of
your order on the web. Once it's in the air it should be with you in a day or 2.

Thay may well be so now; however
about 6 weeks ago I ordered a G5 dual 2.5 through the Apple Store on a Thursday, was
quoted something like 3-5 weeks for delivery, and it arrived through my door the following
Wednesday, though it could have come on the Tuesday had I been available to receive it.

If it is even a day late, make sure you kick up a fuss and get them to give you a record
of the conversation. When it finally arrives and you have the invoice you can get a decent
wedge of compensation. Worked when my Ipod was late.

Well, I've got a confirmation through of Ship On or Before December 13th, so if a) that's
currently accurate, and b) none of the many things that could cause delay actually happen,
then I ought to get hold of it just before Christmas. Fingers crossed - got 10 days off
over Christmas, it would be rather nice to enjoy actually using it rather than mere
anticipation....

I'm currently awaiting delivery of my G5d1.8. I had an email from Apple on the 15th to
say it had shipped, with a 3-4 day delivery. Allowing an extra day to reach the IoM, it
should have been delivered Friday. Phoned TNT - they hadn't heard of it. Phoned Apple.
'Oh, it was shipped (from Ireland) to Holland where it will be mated (get this) with the
Apple Care package'. It showed up at TNT Arnhem yesterday, and had reached
Northampton by mid-afternoon today. I may see it on Thursday, I suppose. It really is a
short journey from Ireland to the Isle of Man, but I suppose that's too simple . The HD and extra RAM I ordred the same day as I ordered the PM arrived on the 15th. Paul

Also when TNT received it, it kept being sent back to the depo. Turned out that, although
it was addressed to me, it had been had been shrunk down to....
" Vauxhall London "
I would find it hard to find me as well with that
info!!

Thanks. Me to! But that's what beer and loose wimmin are for,
innit?. (This isn't the PC forum, is it? - looks furtively over shoulder...)
The address thing won't work on the IoM. Outside of the major cities (!) a surname and
a village name will find you. A surname like mine will find me with no address!

If you have a shipping date of 13th December you may just about get the iMac before
Christmas. My 20" iMac G5 BTO actually shipped 2 days after my original shipping date (a
month after the order) but then took another 10 days to actually arrive. (AFAIK all iMac
G5's are built in China, only PowerMacs are built in Ireland). After the shipping
notification I was able to track it's shipment by Kuhne&Nagle to Luxembourg (took about a
week to be booked on a flight and then was stuck in a warehouse over the weekend), it was
then transferred to Holland for delivery by TNT which took a couple of days and again I
could track it's shipment on the Web. As it turned out a thread started on the Apple
Discussions iMac forum about delivery of this shipment, there were about a dozen of us
waiting for our iMacs from the same plane load and all arrived within 24hrs of each other.
The iMac eventually arrived one day shy of 6 weeks after the order - but was well worth
the wait

I picked up my 20" 1.8
G5 iMac from the Apple Store on Thursday. So far I do find it pretty quiet. Definitely
quieter than my outgoing eMac. On the eMac, the fan is going at full chat all the time,
regardless of work load. But even when the iMac is at full bore, it's still quieter than
the eMac, which I didn't think was too noisy anyway. Plus the eMac was already quieter
than MDD G4's I have heard. G5 iMac is definitely quieter than G5 towers too. So that
makes the iMac the quietest of the lot in my opinion. However, i've read quite a few
reports of people getting noisy G5 iMacs. And even the SOS review seemed to suggest it was
noisier than the one I have here. Macnn forums have quite a few posts there saying things
like "My G5 iMac sounds like a weed wacker!"
While im here.. A good note to any
G5 iMac owners.. Go to the energy saver control panel and turn the processor management
from auto, to 'highest' because the default Apple settings absolutely cripple the
performance. I don't know why its like that out of the box, but you definitely need to
change it.

much RAM, and slowing the processor! Bonkers!! G

It's a 'big sideways upgrade', i.e.
I've gradually got more and more annoyed with fixing my PC and having had a Mac before (a
*long time ago - a Mac Classic, no less!), and having used a friends Mac music system more
recently, I thought it was about time I went for it. More screen area, more power, better
OS, same apps I currently use (PTLE, Reason), plus I've slurged on Altiverb as well, which
is making the anticipation of arrival even worse!

Oh... well, welcome to the club then! I can't speak on PTLE performance but Reason runs very well on my 1 GHz iBook... it
should just fly on your new iMac. If you have any questions in getting setup with your
transfer over from the PC, be sure to post them here. I'm sure you'll get plenty of
help. Take care, Robb

This all sounds very familiar. I took a day off and waited in all day for my
Mac to turn up a week or so ago. I spent all bloody day twitching the curtains
like a hyperactive nosy old lady every time I head engine noise in the street. The box finally arrived around 16:30. Boy THAT was a long day. Anyhow Jon, enjoy your Mac when it does arrive it'll be well worth the wait, trust me

Heyo; It will not be a smoke of frustration, but one of massive satisfaction.
I managed to locate the last G5- 2.5, and 20 Cinema Display in my area of CA, and to say
the combo is good is an offense to understatement. People will often tell you to separate
your music rig from your daily computer use rig, but I have found the G5-2.5 does it all
and does not complain. I moved up from a 700 iMac, and will never forget the
moment I got to see like 20 instances of Reaktor and Tassman running without a hitch. You
instantly become spoiled, because you probably will not often need to manage your
processor power, as you will always have more than you need. I equate it to
going from a fantastic set of tools that cannot all fit into your garage, to having enough
room in your garage to quadruple your tool set. I shall enjoy a smoke for you on your
behalf, cause your new rig is gonna be a celebration. And the 20 inch display is magic.
Have a cigar! Blessings, Damon Ps. And don't even mention
Logic 7 on the rig. I get weepy just pondering the wonder.

IT'S HERE !!!!! However, one of the good thing about working from home
sometimes is being able to receive parcels. The bad thing, OTOH, is that I've got so much
work to do I've been sitting in the same room as a boxed brand new iMac for the last six
hours, tapping away on a Compaq laptop. Agony! I am about to knock off work though so
there'll be no posting until I'm fully satiated....

Glad to hear all is well. Know where
you're at with adapting to OS-X as well as switching to a new machine all at once - it's
not like it's overwhelming 'cos everything is made so darn easy in OS-X (especially
connecting to web etc), but there is an 'adaption curve' to get back up to the speeds we
were all at on OS-9 before we switched.
What music software will you be
installing?

I've gone for a
stripped-down selection of stuff which i'd honed down on with my PC setup, plus a couple
of extras. Total list is:
Pro Tools LE 6.4 (MBox) T-Racks EQ PSP
Vintage Warmer Altiverb 4 (oh yes, very nice indeeeeeeed...) Reason 2.5 Loads of Libraries Trusty old Stingray
Works a treat as a selection of
tools (i.e. for what I get up to). I'll add a soft-synth here and there, maybe impOSCar
soon.
