Cubase SX 3 midi routing help please new
      #53033 - 22/11/04 06:55 AM
I have a new PC running Cubase SX 3.I have Roland JP8080 and Korg X3R modules and the controler keyboard is a Yamaha Motif.

I have a UM-2 midi 2x in 2x out interface but I cannot for the life of me work out how to get all my modules (including the Motif's onboard sounds)to play in Cubase.

All I would like to know is how would you route a reasonably uncomplicated chain. One thing that puzzles me is the Roland has a midi IN/REMOTE KEYBOARD IN /and midi OUT.I want to record controller data from the Roland to the sequencer, as well as the sounds to play.

Also, I would like to be able to set up the midi channels in Cubase so, like with a VST instrument when I select a module, it loads with the correct midi channel default.

Its daunting enough just getting to grips with SX 3 after using the Atari.

Please help anyone.

Ian.

Make the following connections:
Motif Midi Out to UM 2 Midi In
UM 2 Midi Out to Motif Midi In
UM2 Midi Out to JP8080 In
To access the X3R you need Midi Thru from either the Motif or the JP8080. I don't know any of these modules, so don't know what has midi thru (I'm guessing they both do, although you may have to enable it). This setup shouldn't really be any different from what you used with your Atari. Obviously, each midi out can only access 16 channels, which would cause a problem if all three modules are 16 part multi-timbral. In that case you would need to enable them to recieve only on certain channels (since two modules will share one midi out), or get a midi switching box (which will give you all 16 channels, but only on one module at a time) or get a midi interface with more outs (which is what I would recommend).

For your other issues, look into midi device setup in the Cubase manual.

Hi Davros,

It might also be worth reading the article on "emulated midi ports" in cubase sx.

Here ...

Really simple procedure, but well worth it.

Cheers

I am afraid that routing you gave me sent my Korg X3R into palpatations. It let out a continous on/off sound.I notice you didn't indicate what should go in the second Midi IN of the UM-2.

What happens if you route on of the midi outs direct to the X3R, rather than going via midi thru on one of the other modules? It should work in those circumstances. In fact it should work the other way, but, as I said, I'm not familiar with these modules, so cannot give a definitive answer.

I didn't indicate what should go into the other midi in, since you didn't ask that question. Midi ins transmit midi information into the computer, so you could attach anything that is going to send information that you want to record in Cubase. The most obvious use for this is to record note information from your Motif. If you want to record, for example, sys-ex infromation from one of your other modules, then you should attach the midi out of that module to the second midi in. After that, you would have to consult the manual for the module - as well as the Cubase manual.
