What's the one Effect or Processor you can't do without in your studio?

For me, it would have to be EQ. I can create reverberation just by recording at different
places. EQ is something that helps me achieve what I want.

I'd have to say compression. As you say, reverb can be gained through
traditional room-mic'ing (although I'd need a great room to beat my VSS3!), but I can also
EQ at source through mic choice and placement. Getting parts to stand up against each
other (esp. dynamic vocals) in a rock/pop mix would be tough without it. However, I suppose you could go back to riding faders on everything...

I could possibly live without it, but it's a rare session where my Lexicon 480L does not
see a bit of action.

That's a tough one... A bit like asking a parent "Which of your children is your
favorite". I see all my plug-ins and effects as being vital really.
However, I have to agree with the Shief-Man on this one; EQ is the one I could never do
without.

I've gotta have a bit of compression (from the vintage channel on Sonar 7). Whether
it's...
1) making drums sound meaty
2) even-ing out vocals
3)
side-chaining for de-essing
4) ducking-out the bass guitar to make it sit with the
bass drum better
5) ...or just a bit of gentle mix compression.
I know
these days it's overused, but there's a reason for that - get it right, and you get it
right(!)

Without a doubt compression,in the ideal world using the correct mics in the rite
placements should be all the EQ you should ever need(how i long for that world) and as has
been said you can create your own reverbs using multiple mics(if your not too scared of
phase/comb filtering problems). Good qeustion though, its really got me thinking!

Eq is v difficult to get right Better mics are the answer Comp/lims
can now be achieved by normalising But reverb cannot be attained unless you
record in the finest acoustics (ie Wells Cathedral) Space yes , verb no. Roger imho

I'm not sure if the question is asking about generic 'effects' or actually a specific
plugin or hardware processor you can't live without.
If it's the first I'd say
filtering.
If it's the second, the same, and for me it has to be analog
(Vermona Cross Filter/Sherman Filterbank) because software filters sound like putting your
music on a Nokia phone as an mp3.
