8-channel portable HD recorder? new
      #608846 - 27/04/08 01:18 PM
I am looking for something for a remote rig that can record up to 8 simultaneous tracks. I would really like 24-bit, but I can live with 44.1 or 48K sampling rate.

It does not have to be new, or even current.

The more portability, the better. I will be taking feeds from a small mixer, so I do not need mic pres, or on-board mixing capability.

Thanks!

THIS seems to be the obvious contender.

Or for more money (and size) there's the HHB Portadrive or Aaton Cantar.

Or you could sync two Sound Devices 744Ts.

Hi DH,

I'm absolutely sure you can get smaller and cheaper, but from personal use I'd have a hard time recommending anything less than a HD24XR for decent location recording.

I know it's 24 track (but hey, you can never have enough eh?!), but for it's capability and quality of conversion (XR model) it's a great piece.

Ouch! OK, I should have been more specific! My question was so vague, it was like asking "What mic should I buy?" without any more specifics! Sorry about that!!!

That Sound Devices piece is really nice, but way too rich for my blood, and way over-kill for my (current) needs.

I will be using this device for live recordings of my son's band (and any other bands that might play on the same ticket with them) when I am running FOH. It is more to listen back and critique their performances than anything else. I would like to be able to do some basic mixing at home back in the studio however rather than just sticking up a portable hand-held 2-track in the room, or taking a 2-track feed off of the mixer.

I was thinking something more along the lines of the Alesis HD24, or something smaller.

Sorry for the confusion!

Yeah, this is more like what I was thinking! I was wondering if there is a smaller version of this guy... but as you say, you can never have too many channels! TBH, I have been leaning towards the HD24 or the HD24XR, but thought I would check to see if there were any alternatives, especially with less track counts. They are a 3-piece, where all 3 of them sing, so I would really like NINE inputs, but I can get by with eight.

-3 vox
-guitar
-bass
-kick
-2 OH

If I had a ninth input, I would also add in the snare mic. If I had 24 channels, I would take the whole drum kit I suppose, but again, for my uses, that is probably over-kill.

So is there really a big difference between the "regular" HD24 and the HD24XR other than 96K capable?

Thanks for the input!

As I know you're definitely a man not to want your signal paths compromised or degraded if at all possible , then I'd say yes - the converters in the HD24XR are worth the extra outlay (even for 44.1-48kHz work). Even at current prices, you'll get 24 AD/DA and a 24 track recorder at the same price that similar (or even lesser!) converters alone are going for...

Of course, if you're doing your conversion before hitting the recorder, then there would be no advantage in the XR over the standard model.

Just make sure you factor in the FirePort, as you'll need that for the transfer of tracks to a PC (other methods are painfully slow in comparison).

Yes the XR converters are much better - very nice quality

Could always double up as extra converters in your studio?
