As others here have already said, there are no best monitors but there are some that are regularly prized for their sonic qualities in a given situation. I personally adore my Quested S7 active monitors! I've previously posted about them on the forums here.

I would be interested to hear the RMs but must say that the TB2s I have are very good.

The ATCs I have for my main monitoring are probably the best I have heard for a long time, at any price point.

I might go demo the RMs against the Tbs..........I shall leave wallet at home though.

It seems to me that all too often the amplifier is forgotten abouut when disussing studio monitors. No matter how good the speaker system it is only as good as the amplifiers and crossovers used. I have used Tim Isaac amplifiers and crossovers for years and no matter what speakers I have used they sound better with his stuff.

I agree about the amp. being important.

But, to be honest, the No.1 choice for Monitors (if you are not using actives) is the Bryston - recommended highly by many people, with the Flying Mole a good choice if you want an amp. strapped to the loudspeaker.

I remember Tim Isaac as being something of a live sound guru with Turbosound years ago, but I have no recollection of him ever making a product for studio monitoring where the needs are very different (e.g. no fans, ideally!).

I'd be interested in any further information or links.

Your memory is pretty good.... Tim was one of the founders of turbo sound. But duhhhhh He is also a major shareholder of ATC the monitor people and it is his amplifier tehnology used in their range of powered monitors. I have used his amplifiers for years starting with the famous fan amps built for glastonbury. I have one of the few stereo fan amps in existence.

I was about to post a comment to the effct that he designed the ATC amps... but you beat me to it. I agree, he is a good designer of amps, but he certainly isn't the only one. Thankfully, there is a reasonable choice out there these days.

Theoretically my vote would go for Kef speakers with the Uni-Q drivers.

On paper it just seems like they would beat anything else:

Curved cabinet design.

Tweeter in center of woofer, for a single-point sound source.

Woofer cone used as a waveguide for the tweeter.

But I've yet to actually hear a pair, lol. Thinking of getting a pair of the iQ1s just so I can sample their radical design.

You're like me with the original Mordaunt Short MS10's. Mine were £13.50 off ebay and I recommend them to everyone. Gale Mini Monitor's are also very good. I think my next set will be the later MS10i Pearl Edition though, in maple... mmm...

Original MS10s eh? That takes me back a bit - I designed them.

Phil

PS. I'm actually very tempted to buy a pair of the Argos boxes just to see what they're like. Jeeez I'm a sad old git.

Monitor reviews boring? Mine never were, well, at least I enjoyed them

Have to say I agree with all the comments about the difficulty of defining "the best", but having said that, nobody's mentioned what I think is one of the finest speakers ever built (and no I'm not about to plug my own efforts) - The Yamaha NS1000M. Find a pair, bypass the unreliable mid/tweeter attenuator gubbins and you'll never need anything else. Finding a pair is however not easy. Hens' teeth is easier.

There were two virtually identical ads - both quite tasteful as they were based on a famous painting (by Manet if my memory serves me correctly).

One, she was clothed; the other............

It was a picture of the Gale loudspeaker with the chrome ends.

There was a small group of three or four men (maybe musicians) all in evening suits and a reclining girl in a white evening dress.

That was the acceptable one.

The second one was identical, except she was totally nude.

Good of you to drop the AE22 into this thread Max. Saved me having to manufacture some tenuous justification

Of the monitors I've heard, I like ATC, PMC — and REL for sub duties.

Hmmm. I'd like to audition those RM2s!

Don't know REL, but ATC and PMC are on my short list of goodies along with Harbeth and K+H - and that's about all.

You are all missing the point here.

The best Studio Monitors are white K+H 0330Ds.

In white.

Not the black ones or the silver ones, the white ones.

Oops, bugger!

In my eagerness to get across the point that the best speakers by far are white K+H 0300Ds I inadvertantly got carried away with the 3 key. I have had the offending key taken out and shot so it will never happen again.
