Im currently running a behringer mx9000 as front end of my studio but its time to get something a little more pro. Has anyone got any suggestions on mixing consoles that would have a very similar functionality as this desk - as it does tend to have all the features i need for its requirement ie, 24 channels, direct outs etc but would have better sounding mic pre's and a more useful eq??? I dont mind having an older console or indeed buying second hand - i just want to make sure i get a desk which is going to give me a clear difference in quality to justify spending out. My budget would probably be around the £1000 mark - maybe a little more.
Ive been looking at older allen and heath onsoles like the saber and gs3 series and also the soundcraft ghost desks second hand on ebay and wonder if any one here has had experience of these consoles.
Any tips advice and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You're in the right ballpark, looking at the right sort of things (but add DDA to your list), and you should get something very reasonable for £1k in the current market.

With anything like this you should be prepared to give it a little servicing. Nothing major - but pots and switches my become noisy and the odd component may need replacing. That's why a fully modular console (like the Saber) would be better than a partly modular console (like the Ghost or GS3) and infinitely preferable to a Behringer or Mackie.

The cost of manufacturing decreased dramatically between the time that the Saber was made and your Behringer was made so you may not notice as much improvement in sound quality as you might expect. The major gain is that the older desk will feel more solid and have a few extra facilities.

When I was looking at consoles like this I was also looking at Soundtracs, Soundcraft and others.
