Wont let me downgrade L8 to L7
      #637593 - 16/07/08 09:51 AM

I was runnning Logic 7.2 and was perfectly happy with it for the time being. However a certain project was sent to me that required Logic 8 so to complete the task and to keep up with the times I decided to get Logic 8. I had planned on keeping both 7 and 8 on my machine so I could learn 8 on the side whilst still getting work done quickly on 7. However when I installed 8 it replaced 7. I think it just overwrit Logic Pro.app.

Now I want my 7 back, i need to get projects done and not be fannying around getting to grips with 8. Ive taken 8 off but now I cant install 7. When i click on custom install the Logic Pro.app is greyed out and it only wants to install the sound librarys and guff like that.

How do get them to both exist together?

Thanks in advance.

Delete the preference files and or receipts. You could keep them and replace them later (preference files).

The Logic 8 installer does not replace Logic 7, it simply renames "Logic Pro" to "Logic Pro 7" and installs Logic 8.

I have both on my machine here.

If you want to reinstall LP7, you'll need to trash your installation receipts first so the installer doesn't see a newer version of Logic installed.

Hi Desmond - I'm about to do the same (install Logic 8) but I still need Logic 7. Do all the plug's & sample library's get copied over and are there any issues with Sertao Pitch n Time as a Time Machine 'extension'.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help guys.

I wish i could say that its worked though.

I deleted the receipts and the preference files but its still the same story.

I even went as far as to delete the logic folder in /library/application support.

But still, when I'm installing, after agreeing to the terms, the install button changes to "upgrade" and clicking custom install reveals that the logic pro component is greyyed out. Strangely enough i can chose whether or not to install waveburner (although its already on) and the file size shows as 0k.

"Copied over"..? Plugins are nothing to do with Logic, they live in your plugin folders. Logic doesn't touch those, and won't magically uninstall your plugins.

The main issue is with the Logic preset content. I'd take a full backup of your system app support/logic folder, because LP8 will delete some of the legacy content from LP7 (because it has reorganised some of this stuff) - so if you want to keep the old LP7 presets, space designer settings and impulses which may be referenced in old projects) backup that folder, and also the impulse responses so you can copy them back after the LP8 installer is done.

But it's wise to back this stuff up anyway.

Logic won't touch any settings you have in the user appsupport/logic folders (ie your own settings and presets).

As far as sample libraries - as long as you aren't storing any non-Logic stuff in Logic's system app support, nothing will change. You shouldn't be storing user settings and content in the system Logic folders anyway, leave that stuff purely for Logic content.

if in doubt, make sure you have a good backup of your stuff before proceeding, then you're covered in any eventuality.

No idea - check their support pages to make sure it still works in LP8.

You haven't got them all - there are a lot. Check the Logic Installer with Pacifist and you'll see the install packages.

Apple say:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1092

...for this reason (ie it's not exactly intuitive to know which receipts to remove).

Are you sure you really need to reinstall LP7? Do you really not have the LP7 application bundle anymore? You could always try using Pacifist to extract just the LP7 app bundle from the installer disks. Or you could just retrieve the LP7 app bundle from your last backup.

That's not necessary.

Thanks Desmond, you're a star.

I downloaded pacifist and extracted the logic pro.app bit.

I dont think its a very clean install, theres a folder in /applications when i think there was just 'logic pro.app' before, but its working now so its all good.

7.2 definately disappeared from my system though. i searched though every file on my mac with logic in the title and it couldnt be found.

Well "Logic Pro.app" *is* a folder - it's called an application bundle - a whole bundle of files which OSX sees as one application (you can right click on applications and choose "Show package contents" to open the application bundle up and look inside...)

Also if you use Apple loops jampacks, backup your current library.

The Apple Loops are in a different format that cannot be read by Logic7. They are .caf vs .aif.

It only affects the jampacks, all other apple loop content is undisturbed.
