Anyone recorded thunder tonight? new
      #641544 - 28/07/08 08:34 PM
Just got back from a swim and the thunder and lightning is quite nice. I live on the edge of town and for some reason it's quiet tonight as well (too hot for zooming around). I'm kicking myself for not having a stereo pair on standby that I could have run to the front of the flat and cabled back to record the thunderclaps. Some nice stereo ones too! And I've missed it now is it seems to be spitting as well.

Ho hum...

Did anyone else think to try and capture it? Or is it only round my way?

If the weather looks like being the same tomorrow, I'll have an ortf pair on standby (and a stand) to rush out into the night....

It was thundering in Cambridge yesterday evening - a fair bit actually, but it was quite far away. Best is when it's right over your head, of course! You'd need a mic with quite a bit of low-end sensitivity, I reckon, and fairly sensitive to transients (especially if it's cracking really near by!)

I've been meaning to record some police sirens, actually - they go past my house a fair bit, and the reverb from the nearby buildings is quite cool. There's a good (and free) VSTi called Dubsiren, which comes close if you drench it with 'verb, but it doesn't quite cut it for realism (though it's good for that 80s telephone type sound).

Cheers!

Chris

It hasn't been up to much here, a few rumbles.
I always miss the good ones.
Last year I ordered a field recorder - the day before it arrived there was a cracker of a storm. I've not heard one anything like it since. Sods law etc...

I am a keen thunder recordist

Last year in North Africa I was field recording
in the midst of a giant storm

2 Sony omnis into a MD

Lying on the ground in a cornfield, surrounded by ground strikes,we were in the high Atlas.

Suddenly a huge flash/ bang overhead and a direct strike in front of me

Petrified.....

On playback there is a 2 second gap after the tumultuous flash, just in time for the thunder rolling round the mountains

EMI halted the MD, but it recovered

Never been able to get rid of rain on the gags on outdoor shoots though

But omnis render the bottom superbly.

I recorded a thunderstorm from my window a few years back and right on cue the church bell started ringing! Instant horror movie soundtrack!

Not tonight, but here's the longest rumble of thunder I ever heard, and luckily I was already recording.

Thunder - June 06 - ORTF

Unfortunately forgot that I might need windscreens in my excitement so there's a bit of windy overloading at the end!

Not sure that tonight will be any good. Guess that will teach me to leave gear unaccessible - I should have just run straight in and started but it took my brain a short while to cotton on. Doh!

I was thinking of using my pair of SE3s in ORTF for this as it could be easily rigged on a single stereo bar on one stand and so could be moved quite quickly. Any tips? Should this array be pointing vertically?

I really must try to get some nice omnis (if I had the cash I'd go for the MKHs) - I have the little Naiant mics (sweeeeeet) but fear that they would have too much self noise (and too little frequency response) to get a good recording. Might try thhem for ambient noises. Again - tips for spaced omnis? Do they point in opposite directions on the horizontal? Or 45' vertical? Or just straight distance apart?

I feel some early morning experiments coming on ...

one of the best places in the UK to record thunder is in Snowdonia ..... there are several good spots... the trick is to find oneself at the end of a pass or valley, with a good reflective set of mountains at the other end, and extending down towards you on either side.. kind of like being in the open bit of a letter U , or a capital A ... also , a 3 way split is awesome..

that way you get the original thunder, and a load of massive echoes.... the longer and more complex the better

it can be a bit scary , but it is one of natures most awe inspiring sonic experiences...

it's one of the reasons i love these mountains so much

Still, I shouldn't complain, I'm only 90 mins away....

I wasn't recording it, but I heard a massive crash of thunder get picked up by the girlfriends mobile phone handset while I was chatting to her, a bolt hit a tree next to her house in Dorking. Extremely loud down the phone, almost made me jump. More amusing was her hysterical panicked squealing that followed.

Apparently it did do something spectacular eventually , but I was asleep.
I once tried to sleep in a car in Snowdonia - Tan y Grisau I think it was by the pumped storage power station. The lightning & rumblings kept up all night. No wonder they believe in Dragons! I'm going near there tomorrow with a friend as it happens - maybe I should take the recorder. But then I see rain is forcast - I'm still going, I love the raw/wild country around there.

I got a nice thunderclap last week on my cheapo stereo mic and Microtrack. Sounds very spacious, but can't find it just now.

That's very annoying.

A thunder storm and a long microphone boom cable held out of a window?

Mmmm... maybe not such a good idea

I got some good rumbles just now... with the only mic I had near me - an EHX R-1 ribbon... not great, but not too bad either. In fact, I've got about 10 minutes worth that sounds a lot like the intro to Riders Of The Storm.

Despite lots of activity on my thunderstorm detector, nothing here yet

Thing is, I missed some proper big'ns just beforehand, and I kept thinking 'f*ck it, there's no point, the best has gone', but then I decided to pop the mic out of the window anyway and Pow! Tunda!

If it's anywhere near as muggy where you are as it is here, then I highly recommend you give it a go.

Nope. No thunder round our way last night - just rain. Oh well. Still, as of last night I have a nicer mic pre to record it. Just need nicer mics. Oh ... and the right weather!

Had a heavy curry last night.
Setting up overheads as I type.

That's the closest I've got to any form of thunder round our way.

Heard some distant ones the other day. Not loud or clear enough to record as rain was dominant.

Maybe it's a High Wycombe thing?
Everything here is accompanied with rain.
