Installing a drive from a PC to a Mac

I have a secondary 500Gb drive in my PC and I want to use it as my main system drive in my
Mac Pro. What is the best way to do this? Is it just a case of putting it in then it will
reformat when I try to install OSX? I'd appreciate any help from someone who has done this
rather than spend the whole day using the trial and error method!

Hi
Plan on
about 7 hours in the pub talking about it if you want it to take all day

You format the drive from the first menu page you get when you
install OS X (drop down menu top leftish - Disk Utility.)
You will need to create a
new Partition first - Mac OS X HFS Extended - Journaling on.

cheers for the link. Looks ridiculously simple!
Is there any advantage to
creating a partition for the system? I supposee it's handy if you ever need to reinstall
OSX without losing all your other stuff.

Hi You have to create one single Mac partition to initialise the drive. Its not
really advisable to create further partitions as there are as many disadvantages to that
as any advantage.
With SATA hard drives costing about 2% of the cost of the Mac
its far better to fill up the other drive bays to separate your working files from the
System.

"Ridiculously simple" - that's how it should be. Welcome to Macland!
You can partition your System drive, 500GB is big enough for 2 x 250GB, for example.
That's what I've done on my Mac Pro. You can also repartition the drive later, if you
want, OS X is quite flexible in this regard. Just be aware that partitioning the drive
will actually increase seek times, if you want to simultaneously run the computer from the
OS partition and stream data from the non-OS partition. Partitioning only makes sense if
you intend to store rarely used data on the non-OS partition, such as photos, for example.
All your audio should be on drives, different from the one that contains the OS.
