The left-right stereo panning effect is pretty good but didn't really
impress me as much as the up/down sound at about 1:10.
Is it possible to
achieve a similar impression of vertical movement without use of the “holophone”
microphone mentioned on the site?
How could one go about creating the
impression of movement in the vertical sound field using traditional recording
methods?
(note: Sounds more impressive on headphones)

The 'holophone' effect only works reliably on headphones. Room reflections and speaker
off-axis responses make it very unreliable from speakers.
The up down effect is
created by very specific comb filtering to emulate the sound interference effects of the
pinnae, and accurate image positining tends to be variable between individuals.
The website is largely gibberish -- partly due to not having english as as first
language, but also I suspect there is deliberate obscuration of fact and detail.
But you can create very convincing 'holographic' results using conventional binaural
techniques.

Thanks Hugh - I just did a (belated) SOS search and it seems to have been discussed quite
a bit previously so will have a read through.

Around 1.00-1.05 ish is a great one on the left side. I've notied this before in tunes,
even some of my own work i've noticed it but wasnt sure as to why it was happeneing. Now i know why it happens im gong to have a go at creating some comb filter
effects. WHat would be the best way to do this? Just a comb filtering plugin at small
amounts, or something much more specific?

It is very specific filtering. There are commercial systems that attempt to replicate it
such as Rolands RSS and Q-Sound, but these are both intended for speaker applications and
while they do provide 3D spatial effects well beyond stereo, they tend to be unpredictable
and very variable depending on the acoustics o the listening room, the off-axis qualities
of the speakersm, and the listebners relative position and personal auditory
experiences.
Simple binaural works surprisingly well -- especially if the
nature of material psychologically suggests a spatial position -- and is a much easier
solution.

I see, strange that sometimes i get the effect in a mixdown though. I produce dance music.
Trance/techno/minimal mainly. And ive notied sometimes that things soudn to be higher or
lower in the field. Rather than just left or right. GUess this happening is beyond being
to control it?

If you're on a Mac, theres a great program called Soundhack that lets you
do a bit of binaural gubbins

Not uncommon, and usually caused by comb
filtering due to reflections off nearby reflective surfaces like a console or desktop, or
monitors.

No i only notice it in the headphones though. Sometimes laying in bed i listen to some
music with in ear headphones and notice it. And sometimes just travelling and listening
through my hd25's or in the studiuo with them i notice. BUt surely surroundings dont make
a difference here? And could i definaly not create this effect with a good comb
filter like the ohm plugins one?

Actualyl can create the same effect, with a comb filter plugin. I just tried it with
ohmygod and it works pretty well. Althogh once the sounds starts to get "lower"
the effect is less noticable. But this could be intersting.....
