case in point.
Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys. theyre a new band starting to make big waves on the
blues/rock scene. been around for a few years already though.
basically he is a
rock/blues guitarist in the traditional vein. but he sings and plays guitar as if its all
just one instrument together and it sounds so DAMN GOOD!!!! i would defy any
experimentalist guitarists to bring the same amount of emotion and groove to their
performances as this guy - and others like him.
its all personal preferences
though at the end of the day..

i'm pleased some people agree with me! just
to clarify, not that i have a problem with guitarists playing blues riffs pentatonic
scales, as then i would be writing off son house, leadbelly, jimi hendrix, page, and the
dudes from thin lizzy who i listen to all the time. i just have a problem with the
certain names i won't mention, who are highly regarded but from my interpretation have
never done much to inspire.
one of the most inspirational guitarists in recent
times, without a question of a doubt is glenn branca. without him, sonic youth's crazy
tunings and noise rock would probably never have happened in addition to many other bands
from new york. also bridged gaps between 20th century minimalist classical composition and
avant punk. "lesson number one" is his ode to the composer steve reich, which for fans of
the guitar i can recommend listening to enough.

Steve Hackett - not exactly an unknown, I admit, but not mentioned much in this type of
discussion these days. It's corny, maybe, but he really does know the meaning of playing
with economy. The guy is a genius.

Not sure which bits were Tanya Donelly, which Thomas Gorman, but there's some excellent
guitar playing on Belly's album Star (1993).
Peter Solowska (Wedding Present)
could teach today's identikit indie bands a thing or two about rhythm guitar too (check
out Bizarro, 1989).
And not exactly unknown, but under-rated: I'd have to say
that the Stones' guitar sound was great when Mick Taylor replaced Brian Jones.

Some interesting suggestions, to which I have to add:
Justin Sullivan, of New
Model Army fame, but also stunning solo player. Nowt flashy, but by gum he knows how to
wrap an acoustic guitar round a song...

How about a keyboard player? No .. really .. Richard Tandy was the keysman in ELO but also played guitar and bass as
well (he actually was originally hired as bass player) and it has recently come out that
he played a couple of the tasteful, finger picked solos on a couple of ELO tracks (Strange
Magic and Shangri-La in case anyone is interested). Or do we want to stick to
'less known' and ignore 'obscure' .. ?

I second Gabriela (from Rodrigo Y Gabriela). I saw them at the Jazz Cafe in Camden.
Great player, and very easy on the eye as well! I always liked Tommy Victor
from Prong - he plays mint guitar, and quite a unique style. I think Trey
Spruance (Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, as well as playing on Faith No More's King For A Day
album) is awesome! I saw him play with Secret Chiefs 3 last month, and was a complete
master of the guitar, and several other strange stringed instruments (including a Turkish
electric saz, on which he played death metal stuff!). Plus, he is a great
producer! You gotta check his stuff out! www.webofmimicry.comCheers, Tom.

Guthrie Govan and his otherwordly groove. Bit technical for some perhaps, but when he's
loose and not teaching, he's bleedin' amazing. Can't wait till he finally outgrows the
whole rock-fusion thing and dumps his current management. +1 for Eric Roche

So, judging by the people that are mentioned here - is it right to conclude there are no
good guitarists from the whole continent of Africa, or Latin America? BTW - I
see BBC are starting a series on the guitar - I mentioned that idea to them 2 years ago
and heard nothing - is there anyway to copyright an 'idea' for a tv programme?

Most under-rated guitarists are / were excellent and didn't really 'make it'.
Don Felder however
1. Was lead guitarist for one of the worlds biggest
bands 2. Played some of the most famous solos in popular music history 3. Played
not merely simple pentatonic scales, but really complex and interesting phrasing, choice
of notes - really beautiful tone and feel
Yet this guy amazingly got little
recognition...everyone talks about Joe Walsh (a good guitarist certainly but nowhere near
the calibre of Felder). TO illustrate my point, on the latest Eagles live DVD, Felder's
replacement guitarist Steuart Smith plays 80% of the solos whilst Walsh playes rhythm
guitar...And on the video for 'How Long' (latest Eagles hit song) Walsh mimes to the solo
played by Steuart Smith on the record - really sad.
Finally on quite a few
'Learn to play the Eagles' guitar tuition books you see a cover picture of Walsh when 90%
of the solos transcribed inside were by Felder.
Enough said - this guy was
seriously under-rated...

Not really, but I would love to have heard the sonic mayhem that most assuredly ensued
after James Williamson's solo on "Shake Appeal" was brutally faded out. One can only
imagine what pitch his top two strings ended up at.

Good call actually, both Quo
guitarists are well known but probably never made a top 10 list despite their obvious
skills.
Rick Parfit (blonde) is a great rythmn player Francis Rossi (pony
tail) is an accomplished lead guitarist.
Pretty great rock tone from a pair of
Tele's too (and extra points to Rick for using 0.14 gauge strings on his!).
