second hand lexicons new
      #662537 - 01/10/08 08:56 AM
Hi,
I have a tc electronic m300 but want to step it up a bit for a main reverb. From all the good feedback i would like a lexicon mpx1 but cant quite afford it and im wondering if the mpx550 is the same algorithms, sound? I assume it isnt but it is meant to use the same chip and is an awful lot cheaper second hand.
Also, does anyone have experience with the old lxp1-heard these are good too.
Thanks very much
Peter

From memory, the MPX1 has two DSP chips with one dedicated to reverb. The 550 has a single chip that shares the work for both the reverb and other effects. But despite this, Paul White states in the SoS Review "it comes closer to the sound of the PCM80s and PCM90s than you might expect, and its reverb quality is every bit as good as the MPX1".

Btw, maybe consider a used MPX1. I just sold mine for about £250 and I cant imagine the 550 being that much cheaper.

Good luck.

Paul

Hi Paul and thanks for the advice.
Thats interesting about the 2 chips. I did notice internal processing was 24 bit on the 550 and 32 for the mpx1. Just cant stretch to an mpx1 even s/h at moment as strapped for cash-they hold there value really well for an fx unit-suppose that says it all.
Cheers

Anyone tried the old lxp1?
Peter

Should have made myself clearer - YOu`ll get an LXP 5 or 15 for not much more than an LXP 1 & they are both better units in my opinion.
the 15 gives you full MIDI control as well.

Do bare in mind that the LXP1 majors on reverbs and delays, whereas the LXP5 is more for modulation and pitch effects, the two compliment each other. If your after a good cheap reverb the LXP1 is very hard to beat, and still much better than the recent cheap Lexicons. The Reflex and Alex are basically the same thing, but you can store your sounds, they are also as cheap as chips on Fleabay.

Tony.

yeah I still have my Alex & it is still useful.
Not so sure about my mpx100 though. Still I got it very cheaply...
LXP15 mk2 is still my first all till I can afford a "real" lexi or a tc3000.
Shoulda bought one when they were blowing them out at a few hundred pounds a while back.
20/20 hindsight as usual
