Yamaha pacifica plastic film removal - be careful
      #672007 - 27/10/08 12:25 AM
I just took the clear plastic covering off my guitar. It came off fine between the strings - you just have to pull the strings apart a bit and pull the plastic through

If you do take the plastic off be careful as it gets a bit stuck around the volume and tone controls - I had to use tweezers and I still haven't quite got all the plastic off around the tone control - a litte bit is left underneath which my tweezers cant get. This now makes a noise when I alter the tone control. I think the only way to fix this is to take the guitar apart which I don't fancy right now!

I hope this advice might be useful to somebody...?

Paul

Pull the knobs off?
The only bit left then will be hidden under the knobs when you replace them.

All together:

I just tried pulling the knobs off but they didn't come off. Also just to clarify - when I said noise in my original post I meant plastic on plastic, not coming from the output.

those little bits of plastic just bug me, I get a 2 pieces of ribbon or string put one under each 'side' of the tone/volume pot knob then pull up. Should be able to remove even the tightest knobs this way (and not break a nail in the process!).

I use a spoon to lever off knobs. Make sure you place a bit of protective material (card or a cloth) underneath it though.

A fork works pretty good too, with a beermat as protection

But... but... where do you put your beer down whilst doing this?

If you're quick you can do it in-between pints whilst the beer mat is empty and your mates are up getting the round in. The Pacifica 112, having only two knobs, will require the consumption of 3 pints and two mates (assunming you bought the first round), whilst a Les Paul, having four knobs will require the consumption of 5 pints and four or more mates to get the rounds in. If you have less than the correct number of mates, then you'll have to consume even more beer as it will occasionally be your turn to go and get the round in which will not leave your beer mat free between rounds.

The concept of simply using a spare beer mat is beneath contempt.

That's why the Pacifica is so popular - lower running costs.

one more idea new [Re: Ronnie Wibbley]

Just one more thought - I don't mean to bang on about this too much:

To remove the plastic from around the knobs - try cutting (with scissors, not a knife) the film toward the knob then when you get close to it, pull the plastic from either side of the knob. Hopefully it will tear off and not leave any stuck underneath.

Cheers, Paul

On new guitars I simply remove the knobs, loosen the pot nuts and pull all the plastic out. You'll often have remains of plastic left under the scratchplate and control plate screws as well and it's easiest simply to take the screws out one at a time, remove the plastic remains (and don't forget to replace the screws).

I should emphasise the importance of using the fork to remove the knobs prior to removing the plastic.

Every workshop should have a jam jar or coffee jar to hand. Filled with old files, cheap jewellers screwdrivers and a fork. The fork being especially handy for consuming a guilty Pot Noodle.

Oh yes, especially when I realised that I could use the single burner intended for hide glue to make Super Noodles in a small pan.....
