Drum machine / arranger keyboard advice please new
      #673976 - 01/11/08 05:04 PM
Hi, hope someone can help?

I have a Yamaha Tyros 2 arranger keyboard, and while the onboard drum patterns are excellent, I'm looking for more, especially fills.

I'm assuming if I bought a drum machine, this can be easily controlled via midi through the T2?

If so, could anyone recommend a dedicated drum machine that fits the bill?

One of the members on our arranger keyboard forum has a Yamaha RM1X groovebox for sale which has lots of onboard drum patterns/fills I believe. However, I'm not sure if this is overkill for my needs, or is it actually a good choice?

Any help/advice will be gratefully received.

Paul

Are you looking for preset patterns then or are you ready to program a little?

Hi Ken

Thanks for replying.

As I don't get enough time to spend on my music, I'd prefer ready-made present patterns/fills.

Cheers

A drum machine is unlikely to give you better patterns than your Tyros. What you really need is either some drum patterns in MIDI format to ,oad into your Tyros. Or a compact set of MIDI percussion pads to play with your hands to make fills and patterns that are more to your taste.

What kind of music do you play>?

Hi Shingles

Re: patterns. Yes, I'm more than happy with the different patterns on the T2. It's really the fill-ins I'd like more of. The T2 has onboard 'style variations', which means as the tune is playing, you can tap a key, and it will give you a 'fill-in'. These are ok however, you soon get bored hearing exactly the same ones.

Unfortunately, my music doesn't slot in any particular category, as I like to have a go at different styles: funk, boogie-woogie, dixie, floyd-ish stuff, pop, rock etc.

I don't use the auto backing on my T2 as I prefer to start with a drum track, and then add each track in turn.

Here's the latest thing I put together, (don't laugh!) and you'll see it's sadly lacking in the drum department:

The Boxnet link to the mp3: Doodlebug

Here's the description of the tune on my site, plus the midi: Song info

Thanks

Paul

Hi Conory

I've just tested the link and it seems ok, so maybe you hit a temporary glitch at boxnet. Here's a direct link to it:
