Using saffire mic pre's for live sound while recording new
      #683149 - 29/11/08 03:44 PM
Hi guys. Just a quick question. Im recording a gig soon in a biggish club & helping with the live sound. The guy who is doing the sound has a behringer mixer ( so rather than patching all the mic's from the stage with a jack to jack loom from the behringermixer i was wondering if i could run the stage mics into my saffire pro 26 then patch them from the jack outs of my the saffire pro 26 to the behringer mixer leaving me with better sounding recording becuase of using my pre's.

I have read through my maunual (may have missed something though) & can't seem to see a way of doing this without going in & coming out of cubase sx3 which clearly will have latency. Im sure you can do this in a stand alone mode

Im thinking that maybe i propably can't do this while recording into cubase but thought as a last resort i would post here in hope of a answer...

Cheers

Russ

Provided that the guy running the PA knows how to set the gains correctly, the sound coming from the Behringer should be adequate. Yes, the Focusrite will probably be very slightly better but the hassle involved in running things through Cubase will be something that you want to avoid when working under pressure in a live situation. And you certainly don't want to have to contend with the Focusrite's dodgy software going down in the middle of the gig (I fired my Saffire up to check the routing options just now and it caused my external DVD burner to stop working in the middle of a burn ).

Cheers

James.

I thought the focusrite had a built in DSP mixer? If you use that you should be fine. There will be some latency from additional AD/DA steps yes, but fairly minimal in all liklihood and should be listed in the manual for it.

You can definitely do it in standalone mode - make sure you've selected "tracking mode" the Saffire connected to the PC, then unplug. You can power off in between if you want, because the Saffire stores your setting for this.

But you definitely *can't* do it if you've got a PC connected. One of the things that really annoyed me when I first got my Saffire Pro 26 was finding that it could be a preamp *or* a recording interface, but not both at the same time. Ah well, at least it sound good.

Thanks guys. Looks like i will be just using a jack loom from the behringer then. Ah well was a nice idea Im sure it will still sound pretty good. Ive just never heard good things about behringer mixers.. although i have a ada8000 8 mic pre running with my saffire pro 26 & that sounds fine.. But think they might have superior mic pre's

Thanks again

Russ

Just ensure you're monitoring the gain levels ... I've done a fair few live recordings, in various ways.

The easiest is direct outs, the next is grouped - and the third is a hybrid.

But with all of them, the gain level needs to be watched!

How so?

That desk probably wont manage more then about +24dbu at the outputs (and probably much less), so just set your recorder to clip at +26, set it running and get on with the gig.

If you set things up right you shouldn't even have to think about the recorder while mixing the gig.

Some things will be peaking at -20dbFS or so, but that's fine, I don't see a problem with that.

Regards, Dan.

i do this sort of thing regularly, and I'd just Y-split the mic inputs coming from stage so that the SE's Behringer mixer and your Saffire are receiving the same signal. just decide which device provides any phantom power required.

No need to run the signal through one and then into the other, just split it. If you don't know any local engineers who'll lend you the Y-splits, PM me and I'll see if I can help.

Thanks nathan. I know this would be the best way. Ive only got 3 splitter boxes i could use & don't really want to hire or buy anything right now as there is not much money in this recording although i will invest in a whole load of these very soon

Does anybody know a 8 or 16 mic splitter snake box or somthing a bit tidyer than having loads of these all laying around For now i will probably just use a jack to jack loom & patch from the behringer. I might possibly use my 3 splitter boxes on the sm58 vocal mic's to get a better sound...

Thanks all.

Russ

ART do an 8 way transformer isolated splitter which looks like it should be good value for money. EMO make a more expensive version which work well in my experience.

I've modified my multicore to add 16 additional tails to the stage box which allowes me to use two desks with a simple Y splits.

Cheers

James.

i use Canford FST cable and neutrik XLR connectors to make 18inch long passive y-split cables. very useful for all sorts of jobs, inc driving several racks from one x-over, stealing a raw feed loom for multitrack recording, splitting vocals into separate FOH and monitor channels when mixing monitors from FOH....
