A new channel Strip or not ?
      #694357 - 05/01/09 11:57 PM
Hey guys,
Id like a channel strip, Focusrite Trakmaster or DBX etc for vocals,my question to you is this.My audio card/desk is a Edirol m-16dx which has pre-amps already in inputs 1-4.
Am i right in thinking i should avoid inputs 1-4 with the preamps and jack into 5 or 6 ? or should i switch off phantom and jack into 1-4..what would happen with two lots pre-amps...
Any ideas ?

cheers

I am not familiar with the Edirol piece that you refer to, but if you are going to be using a channel strip as you describe, you will want to avoid the mic pres and look for "Line In" jacks. They may exist on inputs 1-4, or they may not, you will have to read the manual to find out. I am not sure what input 5 or 6 look like, but make sure that they are "line ins" and not "instrument ins".

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Channels 1-4 have XLR Mic and line in inputs.5-6 etc onwards are just line in 1/4".

I can switch off Phanton to 1-4 but will the pre will be the same, which is what i wanted to get away from, hence a channel strip.

or Should just sell it and buy a Saffire Pro 40

Cheers again

Some preamps are designed for both line level and mic level input through the same input. Others aren't designed this way. Also even if they are designed to recieve both then the design of the preamp might still influence the line level sounds.

So like Doublehelix recommended you'll have to read the manual.

Don't go for the cheap Focusrite preamps. They sound like dog bawls! Get the DBX over the Focuswrong.

Peace,
