Which application for converting Aiff to mp3 on a Mac new
      #70695 - 07/01/05 12:35 PM
I've looked on versiontracker and there are hundreds of apps that are mp3 editors/ players but nothing quite does what I want.

What I need is something that'll take an Aiff file and allow me to save it as an mp3 file specifying the bit rate and maybe allowing me to enter the ID3 tag info.

I'm planning to upload some stuff to soundclick and I don't think the take aiff files (it would take ages anyway)

I realise that I could go back and remaster everything to Mp3 in Logic but that would be a pain.

Any ideas?

Yep. Drag your aiff into the itunes window, change the importing preferences to mp3, highlight the file and choose 'Advanced'/'convert selection to mp3'. Then drag the resulting file back onto the desktop.

Doh!!! *slaps forehead*

Bleedin obvious when you think about it.

I'll have to switch the import prefs over to mp3, do a one-off conversion of all the files and then back to aac before I next update my iPod with new stuff.

Thanks guys.

Also check out AUDION which is now free and a nifty little app (it can create ID3 Tags, and even record audio) . Get it at
http://www.panic.com/audion/download.html

You also need the free serial number at
http://www.panic.com/audion/buy.html

Hope this helps.

I tried Audion but the 'save as' option was greyed out even after I'd entered the serial number. Wierd

It is true, AUDION is a bit tricky to use, but it does work (eventually).

First you need to set up 'Console' from the Tools menu, and select 'Encoders'. Here you enable MP3 and choose the encoding quality.

Now open 'Preferences' and click on 'Encoder'. Here you set the path for saving the converted MP3 file.

Now go back to 'Tools' and select 'Encode Item'. Choose your item in the dialogue box. You will see a progress bar indicating the process.

Done!

Job done using iTunes.

Seems to work ok and the ID3 tags are a breeze too.
