Vox Advice

I've got a Vox AC30 CC1 that I bought second hand about a year ago...

With the gain down it's got a decent enough clean sound but as soon as I turn the gain up it sounds brittle and fizzy and compressed. Warm would not be a word I'd use to describe it...

Is this normal or does it need to go to the amp doctor? Could it be a valve issue?

Thanks

L

The valves are a possibile culprit, I'd have thought. Though, the amp would compress as you turn up.

I dont think it should "brittle" and fizzy as you put it. This could be a pre-amp valve problem and its probably worth swapping these out. Does it sound like this through all 3 channels?

Try selecting the "Normal" channel and increasing the volume (not the master) - this channel should sound quite dull and dark. The brilliant channel is harsh sounding by comparison.

Let us know how you get on.

Yep, does it with all three channels.

I've got a friend that builds valve amps, I think I'll get him to have a listen...
