I've been picking up hints of this development in the 64studio list.
It's nice
to see Dave lay it all out so clearly - his reviews are always a model of clarity.

Actually just the opposite(Beer/Speech).
Ardour
remains free as in speech as it is licensed under the GPLv2, however it is slowly
switching to encouraging donations on its website, so on Mac OS X there is a free as in
beer compiled version as well, but donating at least $1 gets you one with some additional
features.
That being said, the source code is always complete and you can
always compile it yourself.
There is a news article on the ardour.org front
page explaining some of this and the reasoning behind it. Namely in the range of 5k-20k
downloads every month on OS X alone(Not counting Linux downloads) and not enough money
coming in to even support Paul on the project full time. Trying to solve that
primarily.

this?
Because it becomes
a huge monolithic block that will be very prone to feature creep and bloat. And stability
will be inversely proportional. This is against the spirit of *nix: a collection of small
apps that are the best in their category. (the qualifier is debatable, I know)
Now all the developers will jump on the sexy new parts while the multitrack audio block
could be made better.
A secondary problem is that now nobody will be
interested in a small but fast audio editor anymore because "you can do it with Ardour".

Ok I can understand this thought
process at least, and agree that it is a concern. That being said....

From my
vantage point, watching the SVN commits and talking to some of the devs, I can say this
isn't happening quite so much. There are specific devs that are working on the MIDI
portion, and there are other devs that are still working on the audio portion, Paul falls
into the latter group primarily believe it or not. Not to say that he doesn't keep an eye
on MIDI, but that most of the MIDI development has been done by Dave and Hans IIRC, and
most of the work Paul has done recently is more related to the audio side(Track Templates
etc.).

This could be very true though, I do agree. That being said, a
small and fast audio editor I have been happy with hasn't been actively developed for some
time to my knowledge(ReZound). I haven't found a good replacement yet. On the flip side
though, I suppose I fall as an example as most of what I did in ReZound as a single file
destructive editor, I now do in Ardour, and am not looking so hard for a replacement
anymore.
