Motu 828MKII ADDA Quality... new
      #679864 - 19/11/08 04:35 PM
Hi All,

What are peoples thoughts on the quality of the ADDA converters on the MOTU 828mkII? I am not fussed about the pre's as I already have a good set, but I am currently limited with my interface on outputs (16in 2out) and so am considering switching and the Motu is a cheap alternative to spending any real money :-) assuming the quality is good!

Any help with this would be great!!
Cheers,

Dan

I can only speak for the converters in the 24i/o, but I think they're pretty good. There are certainly a lot of people who reckon the motu AD/DA is not up to much but I reckon you'd have to spend a LOT of money to really notice the difference. That's assuming the converters in the 828 are the same as the 24i/o

Well, there's a certain amount of "you get what you pay for" - high end converters that capture and reveal the pristine detail have a price tag to match... MOTU aren't in the high-end bracket, but they're perfectly fine workmanlike interfaces and get the job done nicely. And besides, without a well-treated room and very good monitors you might not hear much of a difference anyway

I have the 828 MkII and have no complaints (aside from the LCD backlight that died) - given that you don't want to spend a fortune and can probably get a MkII for a bargain now that the MkIII is out, I'd say it'll give you exactly what you're looking for.

Hmm. I think there is an algorithm to this kind of question about audio interfaces. I won't attempt it now or maybe ever (more likely) but there seems to be an inherent condescension of HIFIer's and audio engineers in direct and self-destructive disregard for the end product. Like it or not, Mp3s at 128kbps (currently increasing due to falling storage prices) are the standard. 99% could care less about SACD's or multichannel DVD or 24/192. Often, individuals come on claiming that if you spend enough money on "pro" level equipment you could hear the difference. Maybe, but are we buying it for our ego or truly for those that listen to our music? So much music is played in inferior equipment/with ridiculous compression/or at too high or low a volume that fidelity gets the back seat. Will that 1% of people make or break the success of your music, I think not. This is an age of content and accessibility. So in a roundabout way, as long as you are not competing for a Grammy a MOTU 828MKII should sound GREAT to the overwhelming majority of listeners.
