Soundcraft 328 as a live mixer
      #727823 - 21/04/09 08:24 PM
Hi guys

I've been offered a Soundcraft 328 Digital mixer, and unsure as whether it could be used in a live situation, or if its better left in a studio. I don't know too much about these, so any help would be appreciated!

Main questions are :

Can a different compression/gate be added to individual tracks?
Is there any monitor outs, or anything that can be used in this way?

Cheers

Paul

Theoretically there's no reason why it shouldn't be usuable live. That said, I am using mine for a live gig for the first time in a few weeks and I am a bit apprehensive! I do like the desk - it's excellent for recording purposes, but a well-designed analogue desk feels more reassuring when used live. I really dislike using Yamaha digital mixers live, but the 'E-strip' ergonomics of the 328 are quite friendly, provided you keep track of what you are looking at.

The main practical thing to be aware of is the power supply issue, which can cause the desk to reboot at random moments. If you aren't sure of the provenance of the desk, I wouldn't risk it. Thankfully, mine doesn't have the problem or it's been fixed at some point. Ask if the desk has the problem, or get them to demonstrate that it can be left turned on for days without rebooting, before parting with any cash. Getting a new PSU is possible but not cheap.

There are two channels of dynamics processing (both a compressor and gate on each) which can each be assigned to a single channel at a time (or to one of the eight groups, as far as I'm aware, although I've never tried it).

Yes, there are four Aux sends. Each can be either pre- or post-fader, and there is an AFL (aux listen) option so you can hear the individual foldback mixes through headphones.

Soundcraft also made a 'live' version of the 328, the 324. It is effectively the same thing just with slightly different automation, matrix outputs and no ADAT connectivity.
